A few months back after getting peertube up and running with streaming I figured it was probably a good idea to move the internet facing parts of all the services to an IP address that isn't owned by my home ISP. After a bit of research I ended up finding a pretty good deal with HostEons for a VPS with 2 cores and 8GB of ram which is more then enough for the basic reverse proxy and handful of small services i want running outside of my home network.
I've setup Anubis in from of several of the services in addition to taking some other steps to block bots which have been hammering parts of the site for weeks now.
Most cool for me is that I now have my own Matrix server running continuwuity with bridges to all the other corporate chat services that people i communicate with insist on using for some reason. For what are i think obvious reasons, this matrix server is not open to public signups, as much as i would like to give zero fucks about that, its probably the most ripe for potential abuse and the hardest to properly administer. That said, If anyone asked I'd probably be pretty liberal in providing invites, although unless you specifically want to be able to use the bridges i've setup, you'll be better off joining a more established server.
I noticed an issue lately with connections having a few seconds of lag once in a while, I'm still narrowing down exactly what causes it, but if you notice more stream interruptions then usual, thats why. UPDATE: This seems to be mostly resolved.
