I had to look at the date because it could have been from 10 years ago or yesterday. I had a hunch it was from 10 years ago and my hunch was wrong.

Are you more or less disappointed that it's not ten years old? I am less surprised but more disappointed that it's recent.

So like newspeak but not based on English?

[–] nycki@lemmy.blahaj.zone 11 points 1 month ago

its more directly inspired by "pidgin" languages that evolve naturally when people do business without an initial common language. it's also a little bit like simple english / thing explainer, but not based on english (mostly).

I didn't know about Toki pona, but if the purpose is to be minimalist, why there is redundancy with two character with the same pronunciation ?
Ua = W

[–] megopie@lemmy.blahaj.zone 5 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

W is a consonant, Voiced labial–velar approximant. U (Close back rounded) and A (Open front unrounded) are vowels. Combining those two vowels does not inherently produce any consonant.

the only one i'm not is a toki pona speaker. i don't really have the patience to learn a new language.

[–] megopie@lemmy.blahaj.zone 13 points 1 month ago (1 children)

You’re exactly the kind of person toki pona appeals to then.

[–] jahtnamas@slrpnk.net 5 points 1 month ago

i mean, i've looked into it, but brain too fried to give a shit.

The secret ingredient is the spectrum. Hence the colors.

I did a presentation night to my friends the other week about toki pona and one of them immediately changed their fetlife username to be in the language

How to impress someone in toki pona: mi pali kepeken ma tomo Aci.

footnote

It's a translation of: I use Arch btw

I used https://musely.ai/tools/toki-pona-translator

I have no idea if it's correct.

[–] als@lemmy.blahaj.zone 9 points 1 month ago (2 children)

That presumed arch is a location

[–] Quokka@quokk.au 13 points 1 month ago

Arch isn't a location, Arch is a destination.

for being the person who didn't want to learn, i did skim a few actual dictionaries for this one:

mi kepeken e ilo Sike Linu, o toki e ni.

[–] tanisnikana@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Oh no.

mi toki e toki pona, but there’s no overlap for Linux and toki pona and trans girls. I’m a non-furry communist, dammit!

[–] frizzo@piefed.social 9 points 1 month ago (3 children)

You are literally the only one on this site that isn't a furry, or perhaps you are just a liar lol.

[–] tanisnikana@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Nope, I’m not a furry. I never really got into that sort of stuff. I’m just a photographer.

[–] frizzo@piefed.social 2 points 1 month ago

Photography of furries? Your fursona is now a Japanese snow monkey camera man.

[–] southsamurai@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 month ago

I'm not a furry, but I'm furry anyway.

That counts, right?

[–] Walk_blesseD@piefed.blahaj.zone 5 points 1 month ago (1 children)

but there’s no overlap for Linux and toki pona and trans girls.

Sure there is, if you're the good kind of communist! /lh

same as post, with the intersection of linux users, anarchists, trans people and toki pona speakers circled in red

[–] shoki@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

what does the "/lh" suffix mean?

I just call this "the GEB fandom"

I'm not trans, but learning toki pona has been something I want to do for a while. Everything else tracks
