Now my impression is anyone who is a victim of Russian propaganda can be called a vatnik despite the article saying the word is used mostly in Russia.

Petition to relocate lemmy.ml to vatnik.ml

[–] tal@lemmy.today 30 points 3 months ago
$ whois -H vatnik.ml
Domain Name: vatnik.ml
The queried object does not exist: No Object Found

vatnik.ml isn't registered, so in theory you could register it and set up the domain to go to a webserver that proxies for whatever domain you want.

I'm coining the term conservatnik now.

Conserva means tinned food in Russian. This would work too given the stereotypes of the sort who would eat tinned food.

A bit of classism involved, but meh.

[–] ruuster13@lemmy.zip 2 points 3 months ago

Classism is back! Chav'ent you seen Zack Polanski?

Yes, "vatnik" is indeed a carpet term for people who believe (or are made to believe) the idea of a "Strong and awesome Russia that is in it's right to show everyone else how to live"
The studded jacket with that name was a usual winter outfit of Soviet farm workers and such. So it works as a symbol of a self-righteous uneducated working class person from an authoritarian country.

Lots of them fucks here in the US

[–] yakko@feddit.uk 4 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Scientifically speaking they're all called RWAs. Such people have well established tendencies worth understanding.

Lmfao right wing authoritarians. I'm reading a book about them now by Bob Altemeyer, it's really striking how much about society the research explains

Is Elon Musk a Vatnik? And Trump?

[–] BoycottTwitter@lemmy.zip 13 points 3 months ago (1 children)
[–] greenbelt@lemy.lol 10 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

I agree. At first Vatnik was only used for lower- and uneducated-classes and low ranking meat, wearing cotton-jackets. Now Vatniks can be even billionaires and the elites of a society, like Musk and Peter Thiel.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 2 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

yes, they often say the typical russian buzzwords, or speechs. always with western, or this or that enemy. or EU needs to "stand alone"

[–] Potti@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago

Did you know that there are videogames made by Vatniks? If you want to check those out (and get a bit of Background Information on some Vatniks) I recommend the Youtube Chanel Warlocracy

[–] ChicoSuave@lemmy.world 0 points 3 months ago (3 children)

If Vatnik exists why call them tankies? For the Chinese vatniks? Can we broaden the definition to broadly include people who uncritically buys into propaganda?

[–] agamemnonymous@sh.itjust.works 17 points 3 months ago (1 children)

"Tankie" originates with Soviets using tanks to stop rebellion in Hungary, and refers to those who condone using authoritarian violence to suppress dissidents. They frequently overlap, but they're distinct concepts.

[–] count_dongulus@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Oh i thought it was from CCCP commisar goons ordering a column of type 59s to drive over civilians in 89

[–] agamemnonymous@sh.itjust.works 4 points 3 months ago

Same basic concept, but not the origin of the term. It's a common misconception.

[–] ArcaneSlime@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

Because I speak mostly English. Basically means the same thing (close enough), why call you "дурак" when I can call you "fool" in my native tongue?

That said I'm 100% calling these losers зетники и ватники from now on just in hopes it pisses them off more. А ну чики-брики и в дамки сука!

[–] Deceptichum@quokk.au 1 points 3 months ago

Because they’re different things?

And we already have the word tankie, with 75 years of history behind it.

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip -1 points 3 months ago

Should change it now to Vladnik.
