I can finally sleep at night

Sounds like UK and US are learning a thing or two from Russia

[–] DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social 5 points 6 hours ago

Typical monarchist L

Someone is gonna kill that woman. Most likely whoever does it will get rewarded for it under the table.

[–] observes_depths@aussie.zone 14 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

I don't care if someone holds a sign supporting a real terrorist group like ISIS, holding a sign is not a crime!

[–] IronBird@lemmy.world 8 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

oi, you got a license for that sign mate?

[–] HexagonSun@lemmy.zip 1 points 5 hours ago

Peacefully protesting used to be a license to hold up a sign :(

[–] vikingtons@lemmy.world 122 points 1 day ago (6 children)

what a profoundly stupid country

if you make peaceful protest illegal, how do you think discourse will develop from there?

[–] minorkeys@lemmy.world 5 points 5 hours ago

Violent protest will be inevitable, at which point their only option is force and it's a question mark what happens after that.

[–] abbiistabbii@lemmy.blahaj.zone 26 points 16 hours ago

Oh it's actually worse than that. Protesting isn't illegal, it's just that the government and the police get to choose which protests are allowed.

What this means is that they can have the illusion of allowing protests but actually ban protests but they don't like. Case in point, Tommy Robinson's rallies are allowed, but protests against the genocide in Gaza can be shut down if somebody mentions the words "Palestine" and "action".

[–] hexdream@lemmy.world 11 points 17 hours ago

That's the point. The governments don't give a damn about you or the issues. You must simply never disagree with them.

[–] quick_snail@feddit.nl 1 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

Why do you think they want discourse? Seems pretty clear they don't want people to be able to criticize the government

[–] Jhex@lemmy.world 2 points 10 hours ago

If only they had any experience of that in living memory.

[–] TheAsianDonKnots@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Green Peace went militant and lost a ton of support. I’ve already seen this movie a few times now. The UK is making an example with Greta before a legit army forms behind her. Go against the grain, you get the ax.

What the actual fuck are you on about

This law came from the Tories silencing protest against genocide to appease their donors

The London Met are frequently caught being fascists who abuse women

And now we've got the least left wing labour government of all time happily not doing anything about it.

They're just letting the Met arrest anyone with any word resembling Palestine on them

[–] Zombie@feddit.uk 6 points 15 hours ago

They're not letting the Met do anything.

They're explicitly instructing them to, with proscription and their crackdown on protest moreso than the Tories did.

We have red Tories in charge just now instead of blue Tories. It's the Democrats and Republicans in America all over again. And because both flavours of Tory are shite, people are dissatisfied and terrifyingly pledging their support to Reform (aka the fascist party) instead.

Your Party (socialists) and The Greens (environmentally focused social democrats-ish) are also gaining vote share but alarmingly not at the same rate as Reform.

What the actual fuck am I on about? Rudé Booty much?

I’m talking about loud voices with good opinions/intentions being silenced by the government so the government can keep power and profit before said voices get too loud.

[–] 9point6@lemmy.world 18 points 1 day ago (1 children)

My reaction was to do with your insinuation this has anything to do with green peace. Which it categorically does not

[–] bitjunkie@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The top-level comment was an allusion to the JFK quote "Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable."

[–] 9point6@lemmy.world 17 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Sure, and I was responding to the line that weirdly blamed green peace for something they had nothing to do with

[–] stephen01king@piefed.zip 5 points 18 hours ago

He was using it as a counter example to the idea that if peaceful protest is being blocked, violent ones will be more effective. Not sure I agree with his take, but he's definitely not blaming Greenpeace for this.

[–] Coupable@lemmy.world 17 points 1 day ago

Subservient scum. ACAB.

[–] krigo666@lemmy.world 44 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The only terrorists there are the UK police.

[–] quick_snail@feddit.nl 6 points 11 hours ago

Nah, there's a lot of other terrorists. Like Israeli.

[–] galoisghost@aussie.zone 41 points 1 day ago

Using the forbidden words is terrorism. What a wonderful world we live in.

[–] aesviation@lemmings.world 25 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I like this Palestine Action group.

Meaningful change has never happened without people fighting back. Look at how many people got arrested during the Civil Rights movement in the US.

[–] FundMECFS@anarchist.nexus 3 points 8 hours ago

They definitely got Streisand‘

In the sense that now everyone has heard of them because of the UK‘s efforts to ban them.

[–] JokeDeity@sh.itjust.works 21 points 1 day ago

The world is full of monsters.

[–] mfed1122@discuss.tchncs.de 14 points 1 day ago

The citizens are gonna overthrow the fascism now right? I've heard it's very trivial to do

[–] theuniqueone@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 1 day ago

Thank you for protecting us from this dangerous terrorist. /s
