Bluesky falls below 5 million monthly active users, marking a 67% decline

Almost exactly one year after peaking at 15.12 million monthly active users, Bluesky’s long-running decline has pushed the platform below 5 million MAUs. The latest figures show a loss of about two-thirds of its peak user base.

I think a lot of people are swearing off the internet altogether, it's become a terrible place. Lots of paywalls and garbage.

@ikuturso @bluesky

They'll just have to invite more Russian bots to spread propaganda. And there you have it... 35 million active "users"!

Now that people are locked into their quick-endorphin zombie scrolling, I am not sure there is as much novel incentive to participate in the internet. Like contributing any content beyond viewing/liking. I lurked mostly and participated only in obscure niches. Now I am returning a la the fediverse. It is great that this is not a growth motivated platform so much, it is a community valuing quality. Dozens of us !

The corps can serve up slop for the zombies, enjoy!

I tried to like bluesky but I just found the content boring personally. It felt like 75% of the posts being served to me were unfunny liberal memes and the other 25% was people talking about X. I eventually accepted that it just wasn't for me after about a month and ditched it in favor of lemmy.

I'm OOTL. Did something happen?

At least a couple of factors. The first major thing is that It seems like many people are no longer really moving away from X no matter what Elon does or to the extent they do the hype for Bluesky may have died down so much that they go more to Threads. Ppl leave as the site slows down.

Another factor is a string of bad mod decisions and interactions that the BSky team has had with the community which has made people think they may not really be that much better than Meta or X

Fediverse is dying as well.

People just don’t give a single fuck. I don’t think anything can move users away from them no matter what big social does.

This stat page is awesome. It is OK if the fediverse does not grow all the time, I believe it is the future for me personally.

At least the fediverse will continue to exist because of its open and decentralized nature. It’s always aimed towards a more niche audience and tbh that is a good thing.
