President Lula has indicated he will veto legislation but conservative lawmakers likely to overturn his decision

Brazil’s congress has approved a bill to reduce the prison term of Jair Bolsonaro, the former president who was sentenced to more than 27 years in prison for masterminding an attempted coup to overturn the 2022 elections.

Approved last week by the lower house and late on Wednesday by the senate, the bill now goes to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who has 15 working days to sign or veto it.

Brazil’s leftist president – who, investigations showed, was the target of an assassination plan as part of the coup plot – has already indicated he is likely to veto the bill, but that decision would probably be overturned afterwards by the largely conservative congress.

Nice to see a reminder that the law doesn't apply to you if you're famous and influential

The good news is we can negotiate how we handle crimes against society and arrive at equitable and balanced judgements. The bad news is only rich and influential people are provided this luxury.

Round up the traitors and execute them. This is not a game.

They better learn from another prominent example. The consequence of not punishing these fuckers is suffering.

How can politicians legally overturn court?

There is something deeply wrong here.

Sad to see this photo of them celebrating like this is some sort of football team win.

If they reduce it, move him to the shittiest prison you've got, without protection.

He'd be dead the same day.

If he's so popular the country's legislative body reduces his sentence, surely he will find lots of support behind bars. If not, well...

Because we are on a dying planet and the clowns and pedophiles that control all power aren't interested in changing course.
