I think a big part of the problem, as in the US, is that rural areas - especially more insular ones - tend to be extremely susceptible to nationalistic, prejudicial, exclusionary propaganda. And then people who live in cities are like “what the fuck, no” when federal policies get driven by people who basically want to kneecap the progressive, cosmopolitan way of life that cities tend to have, in the interest of those aforementioned prejudicial motives.

And the layer under that, of course, is rich people trying to get us plebs to fight amongst ourselves, instead of coming together to realize that they are the actual enemy. So yeah, eat the rich.
