I don't know if it's just me, but I don't like the way this image looks, so I quickly tuned it a bit.

What if the washed out image is what happens when you sit too close to the tv?

It also looks like looking at an image taken in a dark room near a light source, similar to a lot of photographs taken around the time this sentiment existed.

Not saying you are wrong, i like your touched up version; but, what if? Dreamy eyes😯

I wonder whether some egghead has actually tested if sitting too close to the TV hurts your eyes.

For example, perhaps the reason some children sit too close is that they are nearsighted. So, they sit too close because they have poor vision, and later when the parent brings them to the optometrist, they have poor eyesight, and the parent makes the wrong conclusion.

I also wouldn't be surprised if the reason parents started saying this has nothing to do with the kid's eyes. It used to be that TVs were big heavy things, and they often sat on the floor. When kids sit too close to the TV, they can block the TV. Or maybe kids are very distracting for the parent who is watching the TV. So, the parent gives them a little lie saying that it will hurt them to sit that close, and then the problem goes away.

I've heard that it's not necessarily the brightness from the TV or anything to do with the TV itself, but it's keeping your eyes focused at a fixed point for long periods of time.

There are studies that have shown staying indoors leads to bad eyesight. Combination of lack of UV and focusing on close up things. So there is some truth to sitting close to the TV is bad, even if it was only by accident. https://www.clinicaltrialsarena.com/analyst-comment/time-indoors-shortsightedness/?cf-view

But also, glasses exist. It's not a major issue.

CRT televisions could give off a small amount of X-rays.

I would say mount it higher but they'd find a way to break it anyway.

mount it higher

AKA increase its potential energy.

Every time the score goes 5-5 in Tennis, I make a Fievel joke.

Gotta get an old CRT it will hurt the cat before it hurts the TV and if you make it angry it will just fall on you and end your bloodline.
