So I have seen this for awhile and had not mentioned something before partially because its not a game stopper and so many things are going on with piefed dev I hated to bother. I kinda expected other people would be seeing it and it would likely get attention and maybe it has but I just have not seen it. Anyway I attached a screenshot showing how the dropdown menus get obscured by the site and its not just obscured because the site under the dropdown seems to have interaction priority. The funny thing is when I click on images and get the larger version like sometimes something like this happens and at other times the pop up image will correctly be in front of everything. Im not sure if its the type of image or what but the effect does not always happen with pop up image. It basically always happens with the drop downs though. I changed to default theme and some other themes and this issue consistantly happens.

That's not cool and should not be happening. I have never seen anything like that.

What is your browser software and version?

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 4 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Linux endeavour 6.8.0-87-generic #88~22.04.1-Ubuntu SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Tue Oct 14 14:03:14 UTC 2 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

firefox 146.0

[–] rimu@piefed.social 5 points 4 weeks ago (2 children)

Yep I have recent Firefox on Linux too.

Do you have any unusual browser extensions?

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 5 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

eyup. turned off all my extensions which are not problematic to stop and it looks better. feel a bit foolish. will enable them one at a time and get back to you on the extension that caused it. no wonder no ones every mentioned it.

I bet it's textise this or printfriendly.

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 4 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

not sure. having turned them all back on one at a time it did not come back. I sorta did it in order of importance so textise this was second to last before camelizer.

It looks like one of the extensions is enabling a darkmode. The default background in PieFed is gray, which is changed to black. I've seen similar behavior with DarkReader enabled other sites.

Oh yes, good point, the screenshot is too dark:

im using high contrast piefed theme with auto in firefox which follows the os and then breeze in kde. does it look to dark for the piefed high conrast? I did move it back to default. I don't have any extensions changing firefox's look as far as I can tell (it is the type of thing I do but I don't recall doing it with linux or repeating when I installed kde). I actually did not fix it by turning off the add ons as I forgot and later noticed its only on the home page so it looks fine from like this page where im on a post. Ill try to figure out if I did something funky with theming somewhere. Oh then I hae the dark mode icon on in piefed to but I turned it off and its still there.

This actually has been happening for me since I started piefed so should be various versions of firefox as I know I have upgraded it at least half a dozen times. I have no script (both things listed are allowed. piefed.social and cloudflareinsights), bitwarden, authenticator, printfriendly, tab session manager, foxytab, open link with new tab, power tabs, privacy badger, redirctor, terms of service didn't read, textise this, and camelizer. Sorry I had not thought to goof around with browser. it looks fine unlogged in in chrom and edge. ill try disabling addons and see if anything helps.

Are you using noscript? If you are, then things won't render properly if you don't allow the JavaScript. I'm asking because it seems you have the noscript symbol showing in the screen shot and I've seen the same thing a hundred times when I haven't whitelisted a lemmy, PieFed, mastodon, etc. JavaScript.

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 3 points 4 weeks ago

I was allowing everything. Definately one of my add ons but so far not sure which one. enabling and disabling them all caused it to go away.

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 1 points 4 weeks ago

@rimu@piefed.social ok I am fairly certain its no script. Even though I allow everything that appears for piefed standard stuff it goes away if I disable restrictions globally. the main reason I use firefox though is for no script so I think I will just live with it.

I have a similar-ish problem, but on qutebrowser. If I interact, I get a similar text overlay of a piefed homepage, so i have to reload the page and then it does not happen. problem is that i can not reliably recreate it, with each page it is pretty much 70-30 odds of happening vs not happening. never got it in librewolf (firefox). thought it was a caching related issue, so cleared all of site data, also cleared all qutebrowser data once too. relevant things in config are dark mode, and a css to make backround black and text white (i can share it, just do not think it is very relevant because i have seen it happen without that css)
