Beehaw's community for socialists, communists, anarchists, and non-authoritarian leftists (this means anti-capitalists) of all stripes. A place for all leftist and labor news and discussion, as long as you're nice about it.

Non-socialists are welcome to come to learn, though it's hard to get to in-depth discussions if the community is constantly fighting over the basics. We ask that non-socialists please be respectful and try not to turn this into a "left vs right" debate forum by asking leading questions or by trying to draw others into a fight.

just here reading about project 2025 stuff and if i understand correctly, the head of project 2025 / the heritage foundation is kevin david roberts… a catholic

don’t know if this is true for most conservative christians in the usa, but in my experience a lot of them really hate catholics for some reason?

many maga conservatives are hypocrites or just refuse to believe any fact that doesn’t align with their worldview.

but if you know any maga people that really hate catholics for some reason, you should inform them that project 2025 has catholic ties and ask them how they feel about trump implementing a project led by a catholic.

i don’t believe this is enough to destroy maga (not sure if i believe anything is 🫠) and i really don’t think it’ll be a big deal to 99% of maga. but hey, if you know a maga person who REALLY hates catholics, spread the word…

I'd recommend doing some research into the 1960 election. JFK's election as a Catholic was a BFD. Same shit happened with Biden, just a bit more subdued.

These are not people who really believe that ideological differences are a problem; they just don't want to cede any control.

ehhhhhhh.

the maga people in government? definitely agree.

the maga voters? just take a look at all the faces being eaten by leopards.

it does seem to be true that the right seems to have less in-fighting and so there will be plenty who don’t care about the catholic thing.

and then you find the few people that have a big hate boner for catholics for some reason.

Catholics and Christian fundamentalists have united in their love of children.

So, you want to know what will happen to those with hate boners when they find it? They'll equivocate. Immediately. I guarantee it. One moment you'll have them foaming at the mouth about "those damn Catholics", then you reveal this and immediately they'll start coming up with excuses. Or pivot to how Muslims are so much worse or some other bullshit.

My point is that this tactic will not work. Only chance is if you can develop a rapport with the person you're attempting to deprogram, and that will take genuine compassion towards that individual. But, unfortunately, that's becoming more difficult every day. But the moment you reveal yourself as somebody they're brainwashed to see as their enemy, everything you say will be rejected.

oh, trust me, i know.

“many maga conservatives are hypocrites or just refuse to believe any fact that doesn't align with their worldview.” this was in reference to that.

there’s a minority it works on, this is meant for people who have that minority in their lives.

he’s a pedophile and they still love him. he is a rapist and they love him. he implements policies to hurt them and they love him. he’s a rich city boy and they love him.

most of them can’t be changed, i agree.

Catholics seem pretty tame to me.

Internally they're as divided as the US along the same ideological lines. There are plenty of ultraconservatives and a good number of liberals too, though my experience is that the more liberal ones are now either non-practicing or atheist.

Nothing has helped the atheism cause more than Catholic schools.
