Crazy, it's only been about 2 days. Glad to see many other people want to see this succeed to the point of paying a reservation fee.

Thanks for highlighting this. Backed. More EU phones please

Hopefully they expand sales to Canada.

They've added a signup form for people not in Europe at the bottom of the page. (Pretty sure it's new, maybe I just missed it before) You can use it to register your interest.

Make it run on a mainline kernel and I'm intrigued, otherwise I'm not. I'm no longer in the market for devices I can no longer use after a couple years. I will not buy another phone without mainline kernel support.

Although I am excited, I wonder why they went for a licenced soc design. Perhaps I am overestimating the current capabilities of riscv. Nonetheless, I do hope that the future of Linux phones will include open source soc architectures

RiscV is nowhere near ARM designs in the mobile space. And as they noted, they are a small player and need to use off the shelf components.

Can this run some or most android apps? This is what's going to convince me to make it my daily driver.

[–] Vittelius@feddit.org 2 points 2 days ago

yes it can. Official Saifish devices include an Android runtime called AppSupport. But be aware that not all apps will work. Especially banking apps can cause problems, because they frequently require google play services integrity. It's basically the anti cheat thing from Linux gaming all over again.

As a user of both iPhone (16 Pro Max) and Android (Galaxy S10), this is the kind of thing I want, but not the kind of thing I need. Or have any room for. So I hope it works and makes an impact.

So obviously the next one to be replaced would be the Android phone (as it is from 2019, not the 2024 iPhone that is still basically the second most powerful phone on the market) but right now it's looking like 1+15, Galaxy S(n+1), or Pixel (n) Pro. "n" being current, what with Samsung about to drop a new version in a couple months. Though the S25 was just a minor refresh over the S24. Anyway, would definitely like to see a Linux phone (or at least something not running iOS or Android) as a viable option. Preferrably at least to bump the Pixel out of the running.
