I know this is the hot topic right now but let's not let Lemmy's default feed JUST be about the Reddit changes. Seek out your hobbies and comment/vote/post <3

In my opinion that will do more for refugees.

I've found a few communities like those I followed on Reddit, but it's quite depressing how quiet they are. Hope more people make it over.

[-] Bazoogle@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

Agreed. I have never really posted, but I feel obligated to do my part to help the communities grow

[-] Magiwarriorx@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Double check your profile languages are set properly. Almost every community off .world looked dead to me at first, but then I realized it was filtering every post flagged with a language I didn't have and .world doesn't give you English by default.

The communities are still tiny, but it was a major help.

[-] Quercus001@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

I think more people will move over soon! It will take a while to build up the communities on here but I think there is a good foundation so far.

I've already joined several communities relevant to my interests and have been posting and commenting in some (I'm still more of a lurker than an active user, I might only make a post and/or a few comments a day, or even a week, but I'm here). In case you might be interested:

I'm just dipping my toes in. I know I'm gonna go swimming, but I feel lost. How does one create or search for a community here? I want to see forums for what I like, but is there a link explaining how to make it happen? I can't be the only casual that is new here.

Some resources for finding communities

Communities/Magazines

Websites

Special Interest Instances

[-] Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

And other instances

Lemmy.world is getting hugged to death

[-] mellowie@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

I'm still getting used this fedi system of things. I couldn't make an account on Lemmy, but I can on Kbin. I wasn't expecting to see Lemmy posts here so it was a nice surprise

[-] Kichae@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago

Wait until you notice the Mastodon users in the comments.

[-] Afghaniscran@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

So im on mobile and I still haven't figured out instances. How do I change instances? Is changing instances even a thing or is it too late because I already signed up on lemmy world?

[-] WhoRoger@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

You don't need to change anything, you can subscribe to communities in other instances and they'll all be in your subscribed feed.

Ed: with exceptions

[-] Bozicus@lemmy.one 2 points 1 year ago

The exceptions might be enough to make someone want to at least have an alt account, IMO. (For anyone new, currently, one of the big exceptions is that Beehaw is currently not connected with Lemmy.world, though the leaders of the instances have been talking about it, and they plan to reconnect when some technical wrinkles have been ironed out. So that is definitely temporary. You can participate with both if you are on most other instances, it's just direct connection that currently isn't happening).

Other reasons include being able to quickly switch if your instance has technical difficulties, and being part of the instance that has your favorite communities. But yeah, +1 on not having to be part of every instance that hosts a community you like. That's the beauty of federation!

[-] WhoRoger@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

You can still follow Beehaw comms, just not interact with them. It would be good is users were warned about this somehow.

Right now, if you want to have an account in another instance, you need to go make a new account in that instance, which is totally fine, so go ahead. Mastodon allows direct account migration, but as far as I know, Lemmy doesn't have that function yet. (And welcome to the Fediverse! :3 )

[-] illi@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Not too late at all. To change instances however, ypu need to register on that instance and do a new account. There isn't a way to switch instances on one account. Many are hoping there will be at one point a functionality to export stuff from one account to another but I have no idea how realistic that is.

[-] Afghaniscran@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Ah ok cool, i have another question, how many instances are there, too many to count or just a handful? Which instance is best to use ATM to save lemmy.world from being overloaded?

The apps I've found search across multiple instances, so I've been able to find everything I was on Reddit for pretty easy. My feed from the 14th until RIF shut down was already a ghost town because only 2 subs I subscribed to didn't go dark at all, and it seems like they just got a headstart migrating here because all my favorite subs are here and some of the biggest I've found already.

[-] obinice@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Which Android app do you use? I grabbed one called Connect and I can't figure out how to search other instances, I found a Ukraine community for example online but don't know how to pull it up in the app and acrually join it :-(

[-] jennwiththesea@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

I don't use that app so I can't help there, but if you go to the actual website and login you can easily search and subscribe there. It'll them be attached to your profile, and show up in your app under your subscribed communities. On the website, click the hamburger menu in the top right, then search.

I was also able to do it in Jerboa before and now on Liftoff, so I would get there's a way in Connect.

This is good advice. I was very sad about losing rif but I've been having a wonderful time finding new communities on Lemmy.

[-] ledgecake@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

The only thing I haven't found a large community on lemmy for yet is my city - everything else (including crocheting that I started today) had been easy

[-] propofool@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Be the change you want to see! Create that community

[-] AJRW@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Agreed

I just got here & I hope that this place can grow & flourish with the influx of new users.

[-] Omgarm@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

I rarely post on Reddit but try to do so here. Find content for random subs if you want to help! And always comment.

[-] Robocopsicle@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

I think I've posted more on Lemmy in the past 24 hours than I did in the past year on Reddit. It feels way less like shouting into the void.

[-] weariedfae@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

I'm tryin'. Is there a megathread somewhere where communities and instances introduce themselves and give an elevator pitch?

I've tried sifting through a massive list of instances but they're not often named something that gives away their philosophy and it is a bit tedious to click each and every one. Not to mention then having to locate communities.

But I'm chill and I'll just float around and explore. It's not the worst thing and it feels like early 2000s internet a little bit.

[-] WhoRoger@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Not a mega thread, but a dedicated community !newcommunities@lemmy.world

[-] orientalsniper@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

I don't think there is, truth is, we are like about 5 seconds in the bing bang, it's going to take a bit of time for things to settle and start having identities, some instances are leaning left, some are right, some are somewhere in between.

[-] Bozicus@lemmy.one 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

A lot of instances are just general-purpose, I think, so any philosophy is kind of come from who's there, which you wouldn't know until you got there. But I find the list of communities on an instance is helpful. If there are more than a page or two, it's probably general-purpose, but a smaller number will probably show the interests of the people already there.

[-] cloaker@kbin.social 1 points 1 year ago

Just pick any instance. They largely all federate each other and you can subscribe to communities from any instance. You won't miss out on anything.

One thing I'm finding Lemmy doesn't replicate much of from my reddit subs is cute/funny animal photos/videos, any community recommendations?

Anyone got the scoop on possible Blu-ray/4K subs? Also is there a horror sub?

[-] Kuma@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

This may help you: https://sub.rehab/ And https://lemmyverse.net/

I found a few horror communities on lemmyverse.net
