Vice signals. Still may want to call them to denounce it
Identifies people who need to be voted out
wastes valuable time so they don't have to use it passing something that might actually benefits people.

Jefferson's quote could be used to defend against higher taxes on the top brackets, and yet when we did have such taxes we saw high prosperity. So anything can be sold as bad, especially when you use a very broad definition and run with it.
A version of socialism is what provides common services and infrastructures that allows our society to exist. I doubt we want to denounce and get rid of basic needs of the public, paid for by taxes TAKEN from the public.
