That seems like an unfair comparison. Tesla played a huge role in creating the consumer EV market and I imagine had to bear the burden of a lot of R&D costs. I'm sure Xiaomi is doing R&D, but they're entering a more mature market with existing supply chains and known paths to success that they can lean on.

Yeah the company that actually creates a market rarely maintains being the market leader once it matures. They always have too much debt from creating the market to be able to capitalize on it most effectively.

Yeah, looking into things like BYD you can clearly see that China was willing to pump a lot of money into their fledgling EV companies (not that Tesla didn't get money through loans/car subsidies, but seems like a different scale).

Source of the whole thing is Xiaomi, so there's that. The company that leads always has the headwinds to overcome, the rest draft along behind. Not too impressive on Xiaomi's part.
