The most exciting thing to me out of today’s hardware announcement was how VALVE has apparently made a translation layer on the new VR device to run games & software on their ARM powered device.
This to me means that we now have a Linux OS that is ARM compatible.
We also have a translation layer akin to proton (FEX?) that is apparently capable at playing these games on an ARM device.
Anybody who got on the MacBooks ever since M1 came about knows how amazing ARM can be, a device that can be powerful while being extremely efficient. This is the future.
This is also why the AppleTV device is interesting, Apple has an ARM based device with Apple Arcade support targeting living rooms. At the same time getting AAA games developed for iPhone chipsets, the same chipsets used in their TV devices.
I think there’s a good chance that a steam deck sequel could be ARM based. I don’t know how long this could be with most of the public expecting a Steam Deck 2 by 2027/8. But it’s possible, and I’m probably more excited and connecting dots that aren’t there.
However, ever since I got the steam deck all I’ve really wanted it to be was more efficient. But I thought ARM for gaming was still a long way off. But here we are.
Thoughts?
