For interpersonal relationships, absolutely. Human-to-human interaction? Love this. For work, or when dealing with billionaires? Fuck. That.

But as far as with friends/family/neighbors/whathaveyou, my personal philosophy basically boils down to:

"anything of mine should be shared as freely as possibly without hurting me. Anything belonging to someone else should be treated as a rare and scarce resource"

That has honestly helped me so much. The caveat about hurting myself genuinely needs to be there. I will literally give someone things I truly needed, without ever considering whether I needed it or not. It is just my nature. And it's not someone else's fault for taking a thing I need if they don't have reason to believe I needed it. So I do a little internal check now to make sure it's not going to hurt me, and if it doesn't, it's freely shared. As for borrowing or asking for things, I try my very best not to, and to only ever ask if I'm desperate. I don't care if people see me as a pushover, or someone they can get something from. I'm happy to be that person. I'd rather be the fool who got duped out of 50 bucks than be the person who let another human suffer because I was too afraid of looking like a fool over 50 bucks. And for what it's worth, in the last year, as I have hit an all time low financially, all those people that I used to help when I could have rallied and helped me in myriad ways, some financial, some emotionally. But not a damn one of them abandoned me.

This world sucks so fucking much, but sometimes people make it worth living in

and if you need to expect something in return to do it, either be upfront about it, or don't do it
