The most interesting announcement (for me) is the new Steam VR hardware. It is ARM-based and likely the first linux-based VR device.

It will be interesting how game compativility will be. But thanks to streaming, we will likely be able to play just about every VR title.

Steam deck highlights that Windows -> SteamOS translation is good enough.

I've use my Index on Bazzite successfully with no issues, so I'm confident in SteamOS VR capabilities.

ARM-based is the only wildcard, but if fex works, then that's not an issue either.

Then just onboard compute performance is the only factor. But like you said, even if this winds up only being a "stream everything, its a wireless index," then I'm already excited.

It seems that Valve has been experimenting with adding ARM support to proton for a while now. But I couldn’t find much information on this topic.

https://github.com/FEX-Emu/FEX

My understanding is that FEX + Proton is the plan and just double up on the translations as appropriate.

Valve has supposedly just been heavily investing in fex.

compativility

Unironically love this misspelling.

I'm hoping ARM support could pave the way for a Steam Deck Mini next. I bought a Miyoo Mini Plus two years ago and put far more time into it than I ever did my Deck, which honestly just kinda gathers dust now.

I don't need specs, I just need something that fits in my pocket and runs my favorite 2D indie games.

Please be quiet and take my currency.

[–] cron@feddit.org 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Let‘s hope they accept more currencies than they did at the start of the steam deck ( €$£ only).

https://komodostation.com/

Komodo Steam Deck Store rebranded to Komodo Station today. Which to me indicates that Valve's distributor in Asia is already ready to begin selling more types of hardware. So that's at least a positive sign.

Well they got me at least for a Steam Controller.

I was worried they downgraded the VR controllers but the webpage says "Capacitive finger tracking" so idk I guess they just found a way to get rid of the brittle plastic rings from Knuckles?

Should've announced a new flagship VR game along side this IMO.

Barely anyone has played Alyx due to VR mostly being sold by meta.

They still did downgrade the controllers. If I want to let go of an object in-game with the index controllers then I just naturally let go of the controller, but with these the controller would fall to the ground, or at least just be dangling by a wrist strap.

Hand straps will be available, though! They‘re mentioned and shown in a few places in Tested‘s coverage of the Frame.

[–] gaylord_fartmaster@lemmy.world 11 points 2 days ago

Wow, I take it back then. Having them be removable and replaceable is a clear upgrade. That's awesome.

There is an optional accessory for knuckle straps for these, mentioned in some of the 3rd party reviews.

Which somewhat implies the ability for custom knuckle straps and other accessories as well since they are detachable with mount points.

I was about to buy a new Xbox controller to replace my old 360 controller that's starting to show its age, but I guess I'll at least wait until the price reveal of the Steam controller's price

[–] urandom@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago

Damn, I still use my old steam machine (the zotac nen one). It's been superseded by the deck for gaming, but now runs all my self-hosted stuff. The new controller looks quite nice too
