MODERATORS

The mastodon and lemmy content I’m seeing feels like 90% of it comes from people who are:

  • ~30 years old or older

  • tech enthusiasts/workers

  • linux users

There’s nothing wrong with that particular demographic or anything, but it doesn’t feel like a win to me if the entire fediverse is just one big monoculture.

I wonder what it is that is keeping more diverse users away? Is picking a server/federation too complicated? Or is it that they don’t see any content that they like?

Thoughts?

We do need to attract young people, this is what social media do as well, very important.

Like every other tech-related stuff that has some "depth" compared to "normie stuff"....? Yep, pretty much.

I actually like that, and I like this about the Fediverse in general: Nothing wrong with YA-oriented media, but I'd rather limit my own online time to stuff - and to a level of debate - that ideally is oriented exclusively towards the topics I'm most interested in, personally.

Mid 30s, healthcare worker but I suppose I'm a tech enthusiast. Use windows on work computer due to needing a few windows only programs for work, Unraid on my NAS, and Ubuntu on my VPS. So I guess 1 and 3 are true and half of 2.
