After ceasefire in Gaza, banks reopened on October 16, 2025, but Israel’s ban on banknote transfers created a severe cash shortage, making most daily transactions nearly impossible. Many banks were damaged or destroyed during the war, further complicating life for residents.

Palestinians need cash for everyday expenses such as buying food and paying bills, but limited liquidity forced some to rely on merchants charging high fees of 20–40% to cash salaries. Some residents repaired damaged banknotes to cover basic needs, while others used banking apps that imposed additional fees.

The cash crisis exacerbates hardships for Palestinians who lost homes, jobs, and relatives, with some resorting to bartering to meet essential needs, highlighting fragile economic and social conditions in Gaza after the war.
