MODERATORS

As you may or may not know, there are proposals to change/update the hexbear CoC here. This is an extension of the original discussion thread here.

The original CoC states:

Animal Liberation is essential to any leftist movement, including platforms like Hexbear. Volunteers, comments, and posts, should not be anti-vegan, although users and volunteers are not required to be vegan.

Any pictures of food containing animal products, including but not limited to meat, cheese, or egg, must be tagged nsfw along with food discussion content warnings (CW: Food).

The question I would like to pose to this community is:

  1. Should this change or be updated?
  2. If so, what are a couple sentences and/or points that should replace it?

I made a draft using placeholder text based on the original CoC line:

Animal liberation is part of the struggle against capitalism. While we don't require everyone on hexbear be vegan, we do require everyone to observe basic decency. Users are required to use content warnings on any post, site-wide, that contains animal abuse content. This includes food and animal products.

  • Do not debate about animal abuse.
  • Do not antagonize vegans.
  • Do not test this guideline or rule by posting increasingly abstract pictures of food or animal products.
  • Do not pass off pictures of animal products as vegan, do not pass off pictures of vegan food as animal products.

Failure to use content warnings properly or failing to observe the principles of animal liberation can result in your post being removed and/or further moderator action.

However, I do not think this should be the final text. I would much rather this community choose something that you feel better represents you. Users who contribute will be cited as contributors in the draft of the updated CoC. I will share a summary of the results in the discussion thread here.

I much prefer the unambiguity of the "essential to any leftist movement" phrasing, personally. The only real quibble I have is with the term "leftist" which kinda doesn't mean anything. "Socialist" would probably work.

The rest of the draft is cool with me. beanis

(although if it were me writing this rule, it would say "Volunteers, comments, and posts, should never endorse or glorify carnism and all users must be vegan")

I don't know if ”debate about animal abuse” is the best wording, maybe something like ”attempt to downplay/rationalize/excuse animal abuse” would be better.

Volunteers, comments, and posts, should not be anti-vegan, although users and volunteers are not required to be vegan.

While we don't require everyone on hexbear be vegan, we do require everyone to observe basic decency.

I prefer the wording of 'anti-vegan' rather than 'basic decency'. the former is less ambiguous. Along similar lines, I think "Do not antagonize vegans" is more ambiguous than being anti-vegan. I'm vegan but that shouldn't get me out of being antagonized if I'm being a dick about some other topic.

Also, I agree with @BelieveRevolt@hexbear.net's comment regarding debate phrasing.

Here is what I have so far:

Animal liberation is essential to any socialist movement. Users should not be anti-vegan although we do not require users to be vegan.

  • Content Warnings are to be used on any post, site-wide, that contains animal abuse content. This includes food and animal products, or depictions thereof.
  • Do not endorse or glorify carnism.
  • Do not attempt to downplay/rationalize/excuse animal abuse.
  • Do not test the guidelines by posting abstracted images of food or animal products.
  • Do not pass off images of animal products as vegan. Likewise do not pass of images of vegan products as animal products.

@BelieveRevolt@hexbear.net , @booty@hexbear.net

By the way, the content warnings section does mention the requirements for animal violence as well:

Violence towards humans or animals including corpses or gore. This includes animal corpses used as food, animal products, and animal abuse.

That way it's in two places on the CoC.
