I still don’t understand why this is a thing… there has to be less than 1000 people that use camera control in any advanced sense. More people would use an IR blaster than this.

I can't really get it to work as anything other than a button press.

Have a look at Settings->Camera->Camera Control to get more flexibility with the button.

I have it mapped to the functions I want but it doesn't sense the things like zoom in a reliable way. For me it's just a button and I use the touchscreen for everything else.

Yeah, agreed. When I do use the button for the shutter the whole phone moves or shakes a lot compared to just using the screen. It’s basically just a shortcut to the camera for me.

I initially thought the same. I finally upgraded my phone this year and since the new phones have the button I just tried it out and ended up really liking it. I would consider myself a photography enthusiast though, so I can see this is not for everyone. It just feels more like an actual camera. The position is still awkward, though
