Welcome to libre

A comm dedicated to the fight for free software with an anti-capitalist perspective.

The struggle for libre computing cannot be disentangled from other forms of socialist reform. One must be willing to reject proprietary software as fiercely as they would reject capitalism. Luckily, we are not alone.

Resources

  1. Free Software, Free Society provides an excellent primer in the origins and theory around free software and the GNU Project, the pioneers of the Free Software Movement.
  2. Switch to GNU/Linux! If you're still using Windows in $CURRENT_YEAR, take Linux Mint for a spin. If you're ready to take the plunge, flock to Fedora! If you're a computer hobbyist and love DIY, use Arch, NixOS or the many, many other offerings out there.

Rules

  1. Be on topic: Posts should be about free software and other hacktivst struggles. Topics about general tech news should be in the technology comm or programming comm. That doesn't mean all posts have to be serious though, memes are welcome!
  2. Avoid using misleading terms/speading misinformation: Here's a great article about what those words are. In short, try to avoid parroting common Techbro lingo and topics.
  3. Avoid being confrontational: People are in different stages of liberating their computing, focus on informing rather than accusing. Debatebro nonsense is not tolerated.
  4. All site-wide rules still apply

KDE says no to X (mail.kde.org)
submitted 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) by chgxvjh@hexbear.net to c/libre@hexbear.net

We stopped posting on X for several reasons:

  1. The owner is a nazi
  2. The owner censors non- nazis and promotes nazis and their messages
  3. (Hence) most people who remain on X or are clueless and have difficulty parsing written text (one would assume), or are nazis
  4. Most of the new followers we were getting were nazi-propaganda spewing bots (7 out of 10 on average) or just straight up nazis.

Our community is not made up of nazis and many of our friendly contributors would be the target of nazi harassment, so we were not sure what we were doing there and stopped posting and left.

We are happy with that decision and have no intention of reversing it.

[–] alexei_1917@hexbear.net 6 points 2 months ago

Same.

I was promised a chance to argue something pointless til blue in the face and all I got was "fascists gonna fascist, we aren't gonna sit at a table with a Nazi and the half dozen people sitting with him"! Where's my stupid technology argument!?

I absolutely thought that's what this was going to be about... was surprised it was about twitter.

It was never really a good look to be on a proprietary platform anyway, same with GitHub, which has made obvious that they're cashing in on their network effect to lure people into buying Microsoft AI slop. It should be commended that both KDE and GNOME rely firmly on their own infrastructure, despite whatever cost and additional labor it brings to the project.

The Microsoft acquisition should have been taken as more of a warning sign.

It was. A lot of people bounced at the time.

the person sending the original email* is also praising dhh, a known nazi lol

Liberalism in a nutshell. "I will only support the good Nazis." atlantic-council

I think this might've been a misreading of the email. It looks to me like there was an email to the kde dev asking why kde stopped posting to their X account with concern that they wouldn't get the hype that DHH and the ladybird browser get by reposting their mastodon Posts to X. The kde dev then responds with the text in the body of this post.

[–] SexUnderSocialism@hexbear.net 8 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Ah yeah, you're right. In that case, I stand corrected. My apologies to the KDE dev.

[–] SwitchyandWitchy@hexbear.net 5 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Maybe I'm not reading it correctly but it looks like the quoted text being responded to is praising dhh, not the kde dev in the message quoted in the post body right?

[–] himeneko@hexbear.net 7 points 2 months ago

correct, the original email*. editing

[–] peeonyou@hexbear.net 4 points 2 months ago

i applaud the move, but wow, that took quite a while to come to those realizations huh

I'm a little sad about Twitter. Like KDE's account I also signed up long before Musk showed up. For a long time Twitter was where FOSS projects would post news, as well as a lot of contributes engaging with the wider community. I'll grant that Twitter was in decline for years near the end, but I'm still a little bitter.
