Another week in the books. Let's chat about manga in the general discussion thread! Feel free to use this thread for questions, comments, recommendations, etc.

Like normal, please be careful with spoilers. I wrote a guide about spoilers in case you need a refresher on how to handle them (also linked in the sidebar).

I have been traveling quite a bit this week, so only one new series I checked out, but it was a really good one. I haven't usually been one to pick what series to read based on who was doing the TL, but Skythewood has been picking winner after winner for me lately, so I checked a series of theirs that I hadn't been reading:

Basically, the MC of this series is convinced that he is living in a romcom where one of his classmates is the protagonist that all the girls fall for. And, to be honest, he isn't wrong. So many of the events in this story are painfully cliche, but since we are seeing it from this MC's perspective, he is constantly analyzing and criticizing the structure of the story itself. In any case, he is determined to transform the heroine destined to lose, the fated blue-haired childhood friend, into the winner instead. So, he is constantly trying to interject her into the protagonist's story and interrupt his interactions with other potential heroines. It's been a lot of fun so far.

Mizu Mahou Gurai Shika Torie ga Nai Kedo Gendai Chishiki ga Areba - "Save the kid from terrible place" ~~comfy~~ adventure read. (Reading adventure genre is comforting me.) Better than cliche isekai but not outstanding.

I'm not sure about dropping huge walls of text outright so I'll be sticking with putting stuff in spoilers when talking about multiple series. We'll see how this works.

Another Typical Fantasy RomanceFirst things first: two leads are really cute together. Second things first: I really appreciate how plain/average Lithera looks (by manhwa standards anyway), it's a breath of fresh air to be honest.

As for the story itself, it's really fun so far. I like the theme of getting hurt > moving on > getting stronger it starts with but despite a lot of talk about it I'm not really feeling it in character's actions? Not to a degree I'd expect that is. Some of it comes from the fact that the pace and passage of time feel rather fast so I'm not sure if they're working on those feelings over a span of days or months. It's almost like there's not enough time to stew on their dilemmas so characters kinda just power through as if things weren't that serious (and then everything is resolved a bit later).

It's the same with some of their other problems to be honest, with a special mention of season 3 which was suppose to be the biggest challenge of all so far. We have a big new problem > oh, turns out things went smoothly and easily > back to chilling with friends. It feels like the author is more interested in just going through all of those plot points rather than exploring them.
I dunno, perhaps I'm just overthinking it. It's not a story destroying problem so I'll just keep enjoying it and see how things go but it's definitely not my favourite way of approaching stories. It does live up to its name at least.

Other than that this series is great. Much steamier than expected or wrote about here before but fun nonetheless.

Hero KillerI think I already mentioned this before but this series honestly feels like the author is just winging it at this point. There is a plot, I guess, but I wouldn't really call it coherent or pre-planned - at least it doesn't feel like that to me. Things happen, story moves forward and we theoretically move closer to the final goal. What is this goal? I'm honestly not sure right now. Things blur so much in my head I honestly don't remember what's still relevant and what was already solved or sidestepped.

The fights are really dynamic and cool at least?

LOL, forgot to tell you. 😅

No worries, I'm not a prude who'd feel offended by this stuff nor is it an R-18 series to hide from any potential passers-by. I was just surprised after multiple titles where stuff like this was pretty much kept at a "kids friendly" level.

[–] PrincessKadath@ani.social 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Usually they are clearly marked as R19+. I usually skip those and read the 15+ version because sex scenes don't really bring anything to the story.

I am not a prude myself, but for me it's like trying to fill holes (ha!) in the story with smut scenes. I get it, the characters had sex. Big deal. 🤷‍♀️

Now you're making me curious if there are series like this where full-on sex scenes have actually important info/growth/plot relevance without feeling like cheap filler. Overall though I think scenes like that can still serve a purpose when done correctly, like show off a different side of the characters. I feel this series is a good example of that - compare "normal" and "tea time" Pell (to use manhwa's terminology here).

Also, I'm not gonna lie, well drawn smut can be a great read from a purely technical point of view. I love analysing how people draw stuff, especially bodies as nature is something I have HUGE problems with myself, so even without plot relevance I tend to get something out of things like that. I know people often joke how they check these things for art but that's actually kind of where I'm at most of the time.

As usual, no notification... 😢

The only one I can think of is Lucia, but I also am not sure if there's a non R19+ version.

I can try pinging you in my replies to see if that helps, if you want.

Lack of lower age version isn't a problem considering what we're talking about, I'll add it to the pile and check when I have some time. Thanks!

[–] PrincessKadath@ani.social 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

The main issue is that I had to switch from Sync to Voyager, and the latter doesn't have push notifications. Not sure pinging me would help. 😢

Talking about the pile:

  • Dungeons and Crayons (super sweet 4 years old MC)
  • The Archduke's Bride Is a Hell Warrior (badass MC)
  • Frozen Wolf, Fire Dragon (can't remember if I already told you about this)

😊

Ahh, fair enough. I'm so used to browsing fedi on PC I didn't even think this could be about a mobile client problem.

Oi! I already have plenty of incentives to procrastinate!

I'll take it... And yeah, all of these are new to me, thanks.

Been a while since I posted in here.
As per usual, tons of manhwa in my backlog that I somehow managed to catch up to. Other than that, I finally was able to migrate my Comick library to other sources. I am still sad about it.

To write about something I can actually reccomend: I'm No Hero in the Shadows! is something I discovered early this week and devoured all available chapters within 30 minutes, just for me to start it all over.
Think about a less OP Eminence in the Shadow, with the same amount of cringe, and the protagonist being a complete moron. The interactions between Phil (the hero) and Kalua (the I guess main heroine?) are insanely funny.

I'll just leave this here:

He keeps on breaking the fourth wall, and every time I have to wipe my tears. 🤣

[–] wjs018@ani.social 2 points 2 months ago

I've really been loving this series as well. I agree that the Phil/Kalua interactions are always a highlight. This is basically Cid's worst nightmare, getting found out and having to abandon the Background Character A lifestyle. Phil really should have put as much effort into being unremarkable as Cid did.
