The insidious nature of bigotry is in how it plays on superstition, misinformation, and fear to promote unlikely one-off scenarios into nationally anxiety-inducing hysterics.
The Iryna Zarutska case is a great example. A vanishingly rare case of horrifying violence caught on film, permuted into a morality tale about race relations and the dangers of mass transit.
If Zarutska had been killed in her car by a wrecklessly driven semi-truck out in lily white Iowa, virtually nobody would know she existed. If she'd died on the floor of an ER from an untreated miscarriage, because a bunch of nurses in Texas were afraid of being charged with abortion crimes, she'd be vilified as a harlot and one of those illegals stealing your Medicaid. But because she was killed in an act of street violence in a minority-majority neighborhood with a blue mayor/governor, we're all getting an earful of segregationist propaganda promising Trumpism as a panacea.
