I can start spreading baseless rumors too. It turns out that Kirk was responsible for his own assassination. Kirk was suicidal; he wanted to die. He hired the shooter to kill him, as he was simply too cowardly to pull the trigger himself. It wasn't murder at all; it was suicide by proxy.
