Day 5/30 of Side-by-Side Straightember

  • Brush: Zenith r/Wetshaving exclusive MOAR BOAR
  • Razor: Böker – Abalone (6/8", full hollow, carbon steel, French point) UNKNOWN EDGE
  • Lather: Stirling Soap Company – I, Rich Moose (sub-exclusive sheep tallow)
  • Post Shave: Sir – Irisch Moos
  • Fragrance: Sir – Irisch Moos

I changed the brush today, but was too lazy to update the SOTD pic.

First double blind test today, I randomly drew a razor with the mystery marks invisible. This is to avoid developing confirmation bias after thinking yesterday that I prefer the 1 mark razor: by using one random razor today and its sibling the next day for a few days, I'll know that I actually can distinguish them by edge feel if I guess right more often than not.

So today's mystery edge felt beautifully smooth and sharp like the 1 mark, I'm logging that answer. After tomorrow's shave with the other edge, I'll have a chance to change my mind before checking whether I guessed right.

Oh the suspense.

What's this about?

  • Brush: TGS Galaxy 26 mm
  • Razor: RazoRock Cyber Medium w/ Superknurl handle
  • Blade: Willy's Premium
  • Lather: Declaration Grooming - Cuir et Epices
  • Post-Shave: Alverde - Men ASB
  • Passes & Info: 2 passes on the head, 1 on the neck. Good shave.

My only day off this week, so this shave was to put a good finish to this day.

I still remember back when DG was all the rage, nowadays it's seemingly less popular. Milksteak is still a good base though and this scent is very great. "Leather and Spices" if I'm not mistaken and it's exactly that: like an expensive leather bag full of delicious spices. Got this one a few years ago by the recommendation of sahenders, who said it might fit well with TF Oro Valley and it surely does. But also shines on its own - I really like it. The blade today is yet again made in India, but it's better than The Gentleman's and Parker Premium: really solid first shave, I'm indeed impressed.

Weekend shifts are usually pretty calm, so I don't really dread working tomorrow and Sunday. Plus it's just 6h shifts, so I should even be fine after work. Everyone else: have a nice weekend!

  • Brush: Semogue - 1800 Boar
  • Razor: Blackland Era - Level 3
  • Blade: V12 Super Platinum (3)
  • Lather: Stirling Soap Co. - Friends to the End - Soap
  • Post Shave: Barrister and Mann - Petrichor - Aftershave
  • Post Shave: Dove - Men+Care Ultra-Hydra - Cream

Yup, love this razor/blade combo.

Friends to the End is such a great scent. It reminds me of Perique. Rich, mature, interesting. Good stuff.

The Semogue 1800 is a great little brush, but man... it takes forever to load enough soap. Just a downside of a soft floppy brush.

September 5th, 2025: Fougere Friday

  • Brush: Zenith/Stirling - 510SE-XL 31mm Boar

  • Post Shave: Barrister and Mann - Fougère Angelique - Aftershave

Three passes, super wet "slurry lather," very close results. The Legacy is such a good razor.

Sample kill. This soap has a tallow base but I find it's different than my favorite Stirling base. It seems more delicate and susceptible to foaming up. Precision Loading has been a solid technique for me, no matter the base. The scent is amazing.

Have a great Friday!

Weird, I find NO base to be on the non-foamy side. I find that whatever size it is after loading, it stays that size while you add water. And it doesn't take a whole lot of water to make it dense and wonderful.

[–] pi_dash_rho@wetshav.ing 3 points 5 days ago

I'm sure it's me/my technique. I'll go with less water next time.

Sep. 5, 2025

  • Brush: Zenith MOAR BOAR
  • Razor: GEM Open Comb Micromatic Gen. 2
  • Blade: GEM PTFE (1)
  • Lather: Soap Commander - Passion - Puck
  • Post Shave: Stirling Soap Co. - Unscented - Aftershave
  • Osma: Osma - Osma
  • Bowl: Georgetown Pottery - G20

Sample September is Soap Commander September since I have a lot of Soap Commander samples.

As usual I had trouble with the base and felt the scent was nice but not remarkable.

[–] walden@wetshav.ing 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I got my wife a few Soap Commander bar soaps a little while ago, and I liked the scent of all of them.

Yeah, they have a nice scent. Nothing to write home about but it’s quite pleasant. Performance is another matter.

  • Brush: AP Shave Co Summer 28mm G5C
  • Razor: Thiers Issard Le Transatlantic 7/8" Full Hollow Round Point
  • Lather: Martin de Candre - Fougère - Soap
  • Toner: Thayers - Cucumber - Toner
  • Aftershave: Unilever - Brut - Aftershave

3 passes. Face lather. Excellent shave.

After yesterday's shave with the WoolfBlades razor, this Escher edge felt comfortable but a little unrefined. Comfort and closeness were on-point, though.
