Day 31/31 of Riding through Serenity in Austerity

  • Brush: Zenith - 506 N XS (extra soft horse)
  • Razor: Zwilling J. A. Henckels Friodur 50 (7/8", hollow ground, stainless steel, masonic deco)
  • Lather: Barrister and Mann – Roam
  • Post Shave: Barrister and Mann – Roam Two
  • Fragrance: Barrister and Mann – Roam Two

I took this AA really, really easy: A scent I love, a great base (this is the soft heart OG roam), and an excellent razor. The only slight risk I took is that I wasn't sure I wouldn't get bored of the horse brush, but these extra soft horse brushes are a breeze to use, so I didn't need to worry one bit.

I'm not sure I know when the deterioration of the edge started, because it always felt great, but refreshing the edge before these last two shaves improved it. Not a big difference, but definitely noticeable.

I'm looking forward to trying our sub-exclusive affluent alces tomorrow, and to finally start by Pudding edge comparisons.

August 31st, 2025: Nice

  • Brush: Wolf Whiskers - "Gianmaria" w/Maggard 26mm Synthetic
  • Razor: Blackland Era - Level 3
  • Blade: V12 Super Platinum (2)
  • Lather: House of Mammoth - Mood Indigo - Soap
  • Post Shave: Chatillon Lux - Weinstrasse - Aftershave
  • Post Shave: Dove - Men+Care Ultra-Hydra - Cream

Really nice shave. Super duper. I always regret using this aftershave, though. I think someone must have added some sort of cooling to it in addition to the little bit of menthol that CL aftershaves had by default. Either that, or I get some quick frag burn which combined with the menthol makes it even worse. Either way, this aftershave hurts. Time to give it away, I think.

I've been using straight razors pretty consistently (except when I travel and use cartridge/disposable razors). Going back to DE is a pleasure, especially with a blade that works well. These V12 blades might be my favorite, though it might be a toss up between them and Zorrik. If I had to choose 3 blades for the rest of my life it would be these, Zorrik, and Bolzano.

I've used this soap 8 times this month and it's in my sights for a tub kill. My lathers yesterday and today were quite nice. It seems I'm getting it dialed in (more soap, more water).

August 31st, 2025: MMOCMQ Day 31 - Day of Ascension

  • Brush: AP Shave Co. "Amber Smoke" - Silksmoke 26mm Synthetic
  • Razor: GEM Micromatic Open Comb
  • Blade: Accuforge GEM Microcoat (29)
  • Lather: Mike's Natural Soaps - Orange, Cedarwood, & Black Pepper - Soap
  • Post Shave: Stirling - Arance Mandarini - Aftershave
  • Post Shave: Stirling - Glacial Unscented - Balm
  • Fragrance: Chiseled Face - Summer Storm - EdP

Today marks the Day of Ascension for those seeking MMOC Mastery. Almost everyone is in for the 31st already, but there are a few stragglers yet.

Well done to all who participated, and especially to all who persevered to the end. I hope that it was an enjoyable experience, and that you developed some appreciation for the MMOC.

I know that this month I've learned a few things about the MMOC:

  1. It's all about the lather. It's wild how much of a difference it made from one day to the next depending on how wet and slick my lather was.
  2. Keep that shave angle steep, especially against the grain.
  3. Treat it like a straight and stretch your skin when necessary.
  4. I still love this little razor and look forward to using it (and my other GEMs) throughout the rest of the year.

See y'all tomorrow, shaving with whatever the hell we want!

August 31st, 2025: AA Day 31

  • Brush: Proraso - Professional Boar
  • Razor: Weck - Sextoblade Med Prep
  • Blade: Fromm Hair Shaper
  • Lather: Mike's Natural Soaps - Vetiver - Soap
  • Post Shave: Catie's Bubbles - 322 - Aftershave

A month has gone by and this is what I learned. I can use a Weck proficiently, but it is not fun to me. Mike's base can definitely be tricky if you do not know what you're doing. A month long of Vetiver and 322 taught me I do not go nose blind to Haitian Vetiver and I never got sick of them. Maybe a tad bored, but I still love them. Never doing Headless again and never doing Nightmare mode again either. Thanks to everyone who participated in our Mike's challenge, successful or not. Also have a great boar brush to continue working in.

August 31, 2025

  • Brush: Zenith B44 28mm Boar
  • Razor: Koraat 14 "Moarteen" 15/16" Full Hollow
  • Lather: Stirling Soap Co. - I, Rich Moose (Mutton -r/Wetshaving) - Soap
  • Toner: Thayers - Cucumber - Toner
  • Aftershave: Stirling Soap Co. - I, Rich Moose - Aftershave
  • Fragrance: Mäurer & Wirtz - Sir Irisch Moos - Eau de Cologne

3 passes. Face lather. Excellent shave.

After yesterday's shave, and after 30 days of using this razor without stropping it, I wanted to see if I could notice a difference in the edge if I stropped it before this final shave of the month. The advantage is that all other variables of the setup are unchanged. The result? Yeah, the edge felt much smoother. I will say that, like last year, I think if you have very good steel, a well-formed edge, and reasonable technique, stropping is not required for every shave.

Using mutton tallow with the I, Rich Moose scent was absolutely luxurious. I could easily go another month - but I won't. You need mutton tallow in your life!

Finally, 31 days of Raw Hoggin' comes to an end. Thank you u/EldrormR! I enjoy this challenge. I will say that this Zenith brush is a unicorn. It is far beyond where my other boars were at this stage. I am excited to see where its development will be after 50 and then 100 uses.

Great month! My favorite challenge of the year.

Here's a shaving video for this final shave where I talk a little about my adaptation of @sgrdddy's slurry lather.

Interesting and relatively predictable results! I am a bit surprised that linen and/or leather can so easily bring hard steel back into shape. Perhaps if you really pushed it, say, for 2 months, then stropping would be less effective. Time for an experiment!

The edge-feel improved and post-shave skin feel improved. Today’s shave with a fresh edge let me know that the Moarteen has dulled and I compensated with technique.

A fresh edge is so nice, I can’t see myself sgrdddying a straight.

31.08.2025

  • Brush: RazoRock Beehive 28 mm
  • Razor: Leaf Thorn
  • Blade: Derby Premium (half DE)
  • Lather: Zingari Man - The Rambler
  • Post-Shave: OAM - oli del benessere sensitive skin toner
  • Passes & Info: a single pass on the head and on the neck, a really smooth solid shave.

A night shave before my first shift as a RN tomorrow. Kinda nervous, kinda excited.

Rambler's sweet scent is kinda intoxicating, normally I'm not too keen on sweet things but this one is really fascinating. Had worked up a really good lather today, so it was quite enjoyable to shave today.

Have a good start into the new week!
