I tried to like the Disney series, but the whole appeal, at least for me, of doctor who, is that it's not overly sparkly with CGI and shit. The original series was bare bones as fuck. That's what makes doctor who so good. they didn't need a bunch of special effects to attain a great show.

well, that's good to hear.
give me more character work, less big CG please.
My thoughts exactly!
I have a feeling the Deadline writers were cackling with glee at how ambiguous that quote is without context.
It is disappointing how low the numbers seem to be dropping on the show though. I wonder if it's just losing the magic it had, or if the intended audience is busy with other things. I know in my case I was excited to check out the semi-reboot, but I've just not gotten to it.
I think the answer is probably complicated - the overall tv landscape is in a tough place, and who knows what other factors are in play.
I personally think the RTD2 era has been fine, with the usual assortment of episodes ranging from outstanding to not-that-great, and some unfortunately disappointing finales that tend to leave an aftertaste.
That's what I've been hearing, I still hope to check it out sometime. I thought Sethu did a good job on Andor, and although I've not seen Gatwa in anything, the clips I've seen of his Doctor were pretty good!
i think Ncuti does have a good, if short run. when he shines he really shines.
It was up against football and BGT. The numbers are less important than chart position, and episodes were regular visitors to the top ten scripted.
Wow, it's amazing that those are the numbers that will get a show to the top ten anymore. I guess social media and other entertainment sources have really hit the scripted shows hard. At least it sounds like it's not as bad for the show as the article makes it out to be!
