America that was illegal to have interracial marriage in and could result in death just a few decades ago: "yeah we can reform this into having better rights"
Third world country that allows gay relations but not marriage: "KILL KILL KILL DESTROY THE ENTIRE COUNTRY DROP A NUKE"
Ethnic Minorities and People of Color
Official Title of this Community: Ethnic Minorities and People of Color
Why is the title different?
We like to have fun here.
What is this place? A safe space for underrepresented peoples and peoples of color to talk, chill, and vibe.
What are the basic rules of the community?
-
Follow Lemmy TOS and Community Guidelines. Non negotiable. This is the bedrock and mods will make decisions with this always in mind.
-
This community is for ethnic minorities and people of color. This is a safe space where such people can freely discuss their struggles, insight, and thoughts without fear. If you are not, we respectfully ask you do not post or comment here. A future community will be established to allow for racial discussions with a mixed userbase. However, remember, comments here must still respect Lemmy TOS and Community Guidelines.
-
Irony Racism is still racism. Racism is bad m'kay? We will treat irony racism and bad faith racist satire as racism. Will wield the ban hammer accordingly.
-
No sectarianism: This is an identity channel not a channel for you all to complain about why XYZ isn't the "one true leftism". Take that to another place.
-
Stupidpol is not allowed. Stupidpol is class reductionist. We are an identity community. Thinking like stupidpol ignores the struggles of the oppressed, their voices, and their need for unique support. Nothing says oppression more than someone saying that the identity you have is "not real" and that if you only thought like them you'd see what your "real" identity is. Mods reserve the right to ban users and content who promote stupidpol, stupidpol memes, and other class reductionist thinking.
FAQ
I don't look XYZ and/or sometimes I can pass as white so I don't know if I can post here. Can I?
-
This place is for ethnic minorities and people of color. This includes those of mixed heritage and those who may be "white" but are of an ethnicity that is a minority in their area (i.e. Kurds, etc) If you've experienced oppression due to your identity that is not based on sexual / gender identification, you are welcome here.
-
Moreover, for our American audience, we have people from around the world who are "white" but are oppressed due to being a minority in their country. They are and should be welcomed here.
What can I post?
- Anything you think is relevant to the mission of this community. Things will evolve over time.
- Topics and things relevant to EM and POC.

...and the reforms often don't stick lol. Gay marriage hasn't even lasted a generation before going back on the chopping block. Fucking child labor is de-facto legal here with the age requirements always getting lower. Abortion is already being prosecuted, both doctors and patients.
Americans really just want an excuse to do colonizer shit.
Word. Interracial marriage will be on the chopping block with this supreme court hell some GOP are "just asking questions" about it which usually the chickenshit way of saying its in their plans
They already basically started this, with some people losing their greencard even though they're married.
Honestly worried about this happening to my sister. She and her husband are both immigrants, but from different countries. They could very well get deported to different places.
hope both of them are safe
White Americans will have more empathy for themselves and their fellow racists then even consider having a shred of empathy for nonwhites.
They also don't really care about queer people in designated "enemy" states. Hard to have a good queer life after being blown up by some American bomb
I believe they'd have more empathy for a soldier who'll kill a queer poc.
Absolutely.
And I in turn have no empathy for the troops
Why then your hypocritical phrases, your attempt to find an impossible pretext?
We have no compassion and we ask no compassion from you. When our turn comes, we shall not make excuses for the terror. But the royal terrorists, the terrorists by the grace of God and the law, are in practice brutal, disdainful, and mean, in theory cowardly, secretive, and deceitful, and in both respects disreputable.
How they gonna chat to people about rights when healthcare isn't a right and these lot have a weird gun fetish so strong guns are a leading cause of child death?
Mfs just denied healthcare visas for Palestine children because of that laura loomer freak
Being Latino in several spots is enough to have ICE gestapo run up on you. Hell they fired upon an innocent family just recently and they brag about fucking alligator camps
To add to that, in pre-colonial times a lot of cultures in Africa and the Americas (and possibly other places) had more inclusive gender systems than the west which got stomped out by european imperialists and christian missionaries. We're still dealing with the fallout of that shit today.
Lol at the zionist mods not being banned and we're supposed to ignore that because we got the emoji
Only 2 people got removed and they think it's enough, a purge should be done.
a purge should be done.
There are multiple mods with all kinds of horrendous shit if you check the mod log. They've been temp banned before for saying awful shit, then they go right back to being a mod and repeat every few months whenever there's another struggle session.
Then there's the mods who don't get banned for saying awful shit. I won't forget I was here for like a month and a mod blew up on me because I said "Maybe you shouldn't shoot people in the middle of the night that enter your house for the following reasons." Settler brain kicks in and this whitey bans me, removes my comments, removes comments unrelated to what we were talking about in other threads, then removes his comments to cover his tracks.
And who fucking knows how many mods do stuff like this? Then they wonder why this site is predominantly white people from NATO countries.
Didn't realize I could ever even come close to calling this site HeKKKSSbear unironically... 😢
Even more weird because they had no issue checking likes when they were looking for alts...
pointless stale Hexbear drama
I have a higher tolerance for white nonsense than most here (mostly because I don't deal with white people in my personal life and rarely in my work life), but who the fuck thought it was a good idea to have some Hawaiian activist as the "fuck Israel" emote? Jesus Christ.
Going through comments on popular threads often leave me with a slight whiff of (white) american ignorance unfortunately. The upside is that there are quite some users calling this out. Those users keep this place worthwile coming back to imho
Ok... I didn't think much of it (personally thought it was weird to have such an emote named that :shrug-outta-hecks: ) but damn, I only came to noticed just realized how fucked up it is.
I don't remember every detail but I'm pretty sure that during one of the older struggle sessions about burning the Israeli flag (which resulted in the burning IOF and IDF flag emojis) that point was also brought up. What I don't remember was what the justification was and the fact that it has stayed that way for this long shows just how little some of the mods and users on here care about em_poc voices.
A pretty attractive Black guy flirted with me today, and it's a confidence boost for sure, but I'm genuinely shocked because I keep forgetting that I look like a woman to most people nowadays. I don't think he knows that I'm 🏳️⚧️.
Ended up filing a complaint against this therapist I saw. He let baseless, irrelevant, and unprofessional bias prevent me from getting care that is absolutely essential to my well-being as a queer person. What grosses me out is that this was specifically at a clinic that claims to specialize in LGBTQ+ care. I hope something comes of this, but meh, these formal processes are rarely ever actually just. I scheduled with a new therapist at an organization that is queer and POC led (this other therapist who rejected my care is extremely ), and they were able to give me a free consultation. I expect them to be better in the long run.
It's gonna sound weird but I gotta say I've really grown to love my skin color more and more. Mom brought me up with a lot of colorism brainworms that I'm getting rid of as I grow up so I think I'm making progress
I forgot how exhausting and demoralizing signing up for jobs was, fuck the free market job guarante program now. I don't wanna be lumpen forever
I want to preface this by saying that I welcome any corrections if I use wrong terminology or offensive language. Please feel free to roast me if I say some reactionary shit.
Hello comrades, I'm looking for some info on chicanismo, primarily our indigenous brother's and sister’s view on it, after watching a video featuring Rick Tabenunaka from Decolonized Buffalo Podcast and his views on chicanismo. His primary thesis is that chicanismo is a settler colonialist project intended to erase the indigenous communities that lived and Live in the area that chicanos call Aztlán. Most of his evidence comes from the fact that early Chicano leaders appropriated the concepts of "La Raza" and "mestizaje" from José Vasconcelos’s book "La raza cósmica" or The Cosmic Race. Things get a little weird when you look into who José Vasconcelos was.
Vasconcelos was a Mexican philosopher and a thought leader of the Mexican revolution who went on to become secretary of education in the new government. In his most famous work, "La raza cósmica", he put forward the theory that since the people of Latin America were a mix of all the world's races they were the prime candidates for the creation of a "fifth race". Things get really bad when you read about his newspaper El Timón. El Timón mostly featured pro Nazi articles, news from the German frontlines, and showcased photos of the "heroic actions" of German, Japanese, and Italian troops. So yeah this dude was a Nazi piece of trash.
This is starting to sound like a hit piece on chicanismo which was not my intention but this new info has given me a little "crisis of faith" surrounding my Mexican identity. I guess I'm just looking for something to help me process this and figure out whether it's a legitimate argument and critique of chicanismo. Thank you for your time and I hope you all have a good day!
I couldn't find the original video I saw so I will post some other ones where Rick also speaks about chicanismo. I will also leave my source on Vasconcelos’s Nazi ties.
This does read like a hit piece against chicanismo, and it should be! Yeah the whole aztlan shit is very settler colonial and appropriates a lot of stuff from pueblos originarios. Like the danza azteca stuff that’s just new age religion and spirituality co opting dances from pueblos originarios.
I luckily never fell into that stuff because for whatever reason I felt iffy about it when i first heard about it and ignored it but i understand the crisis it causes in your mexican identity. It’s important to remember though that there is an incredibly rich mexican identity both in the “standard” mexican culture and more importantly the culture and identity of pueblo originarios. I also felt kind of lost or stranded in where exactly my identity lied but a big thing for me is realizing i don’t have to box myself into one identity, we are who we are based off of our lived experiences.
As far as actually feeling like you belong the biggest thing that helped me is immersion. even just joining online communities based out of mexico is great, also i feel like mexicans from mexico tend to be much less reactionary and usian brain coded so that’s always nice lol. sorry for the word slop, i just got off work and have been reading the naked lunch so my brain is fried.
You're very right. Chicanismo is whack indigenous erasure and appropriation. It seems it was an important initial stage to build cultural and racial movement for Mexican diaspora but it's now being rightfully dismantled as the colonizer fantasy it is, which opens the space for even better internationalism within and beyond Latin America.
That's wild that dude was a Nazi. That makes so much sense.
Plague rats and apologists continuing to infest the Hexbear COVID comm, running free
I'm glad Hexbears are creating a safe space to help proud and smug social murderers feel better about themselves
Imagine tailing apolitical middle aged Aunties that have had no political education that are just trying not to die, calling yourself a communist and talking down to everyone that sees you as you are
If masking is normalized in the third world maybe just keep your pathetic inability to uphold basic principles to yourselves instead of turning principled spaces for victims and activists into support groups for their oppressors, i.e perpetrators of social murder
Settlers and their allies would would rather kill someone than look like a leftist:
What I like about China and what liberals hate about it is the same, all those European powers with centuries of genocide slavery and colonialism, overtaken by a global south country. They sank our ships but lost the race.
White people who are marginalized (e.g. white women, white queer people, white ND people, etc.) be like:
The interview with the vegan bakery went incredibly well, and it seems to be a good fit. They have quite a small team that is 100% queer and also is comprised of a few POC. I have barista experience, and they seem to have greatly valued that and the fact that I'm vegan as well, of course.
I'm not trying to lean too much into wishful thinking, but something about this interview stood out to me. The person interviewing me did not speak in "ifs." So, for example, they didn't say, "If you get hired..." Instead, they said, "When you start working here..."
They are interviewing a few other people, though, so I still have competition. However, this may be the most confident I've ever been about an interview yet. I don't even feel like the job interview that I had a referral for went over this well.
The hiring manager specifically told me that they try not to make interviews too formal and that they aim to greatly differ from how most places do it.
Fingers crossed! 🤞🏿
Picking up with the last comment I made in the previous thread:
Just blocked this very confused/confusing white man on Instagram...
He posted a lot of stories promoting feminism and racial justice, but I always got this iffy virtue signal kinda vibe from the guy even from the beginning.
He overdoes his "white guilt" and "male guilt" to a point where you know he's trying really hard to win a "#oneofthegoodones" trophy.
But then today, he shared something that's totally off color.
cw: reactionary poc brainrot
He shared this reel of this bootlicking Black man defending the take "White people didn't start slavery—they actually were the ones to end it!" as a means of articulating the point that people should stop being "racist to white people."
I immediately blocked his ass. What the fuck!?
Lol its like those "male feminists" who do the most and turn out to be predators. We don't believe you... You need more people.
seems like a very confused man indeed. you cant play into "white guilt" while simultaneously thinking that being racist to white people is a phenomenon that exists lol.
Yesterday my partner and I had another talk about when to have ''the racism conversation'' with our now 2 year old.
My partner was barely three years old when being warned about racism and exclusion works, which in hindsight protected them but made them anxious at times as well. I didn't had the conversation until my (pre-)teens, which kept me blissfully ignorant (thank gods for my slow wits lol), but also got me in some hairy situations. Probably we'll wait until the damned moment will be there before we break it to the kid, not sure about it yet though.
I always thought POC never really got to choose when the talk happens. Some life event triggers it, not wishing bad on your baby but know it can be the case.
I mean, if you're in some POC-majority area, like the occupied territories of Hawaii, one may not experience the same structural and societal racism as much there, compared to, IDK, the Northwest, such as in Oregon.
Oh good point
yeah my partner grew up in a much more hostile area thn me in that sense , that definitely shaped our positions on this. Fortunately situations in our area also slightly improved in the years, so the threats for the child will hopefully be less acute. If the kid can stay carefree of this bullshit a few more years I consider that a win to be honest.
The older I get, the more childhood trauma abuse and neglect seems to catch up to me. You’d think it would be the opposite, but time seems to only exacerbate the wounds. Tried therapy, meditation, running away, coming back, running away again, surrounding myself with people, isolation, reading theory, radical action, while all these life experiences have brought me closer to myself and built my outward resilience, it feels like the internal pain has only gotten worse. It also just sucks knowing I’ve put in 100x the work and lived more genuinely than the vast majority of people (at least in the western world) but I still feel like an outcast that everyone would prefer to just wither away, I shouldn’t have had to work this hard. Like I genuinely don’t know how I’m supposed to carry on this way.. still just trying to take it a day at a time, because I know I deserve better, and I’m so bitter that giving up would mean they won and I just can’t have that
A comment I made regarding Isn'traeli veganwashing
What I find really odd about Isn'trael's veganwashing is that they are effectively doing moral licensing with something that is MORALLY NEUTRAL.
Of course, moral licensing is extremely flawed even if done with something that is, on the other hand, MORALLY VIRTUOUS, but it's especially odd to do it with something that is morally neutral.
For example, saying something like, "Don't be mad at that guy for abusing children because he donates to charity!", is moral licensing that exploits a morally virtuous action (donating to charity), and it is obviously a display of very poor reasoning.
But saying something like, "Israel is the vegan capital of the world, so let's ignore their horrendous abuses and celebrate them!", is doing the same with VEGANISM, which is a MORALLY NEUTRAL stance. Refusing to exploit (non-human) animals does not make you a saint or even the slightest bit more charitable.
So, in the case of Isn'traeli veganwashing, this would be more akin to saying, "Don't be mad at that guy for abusing children because he refuses to call racial minorities slurs!"
It's even more absurd when you look at it that way, but regardless, the point still stands. Even if we were to grant true that A) Isn'trael is this "vegan haven" people paint it as and B) veganism is morally virtuous rather than morally neutral, that would not excuse literal fucking genocide. It's simply absurd to argue otherwise and would be ultimately morally bankrupt to uphold.
So like I knew for a while my dad wasn't my biological dad but I didn't know that he knew too so I'm like so ober the moon rn. We love each other very dearly and I'm proud to call him my dad. Kinda wish my mom would have told me he knew I was always just a bit scared but now all those years of tiny doubt are lifted
Whenever I lament the net dying due to the EU or whatever then I see any comment section on race and I really wonder if anything of value will be lost (apart from the vast on info).
@FunkyStuff@hexbear.net Sorry I forgot to add recommendations in the last thread. I was kind of occupied with other stuff and forgot to reply.
Someone there recommended rohan, who I would say is pretty great at tackling lot of broader indian diaspora issues as well as history. He made a recent video on naxalism which I have yet to see but it probably is decent.
Anyways here I will try and put a decent list. I will try to add links if I can.
Ambedkar - annihilation of caste ; Very good primer on casteism and hinduism. Mainly goes into why gandhi is a piece of shit.
Ambedkar - castes in India ; Decent but small primer on casteism/brahmins
Sujatha Gidla - Ants among elephants ; Its a real account of the dalit author and her family in the backdrop of maoist armed struggle in the south india. Deals with patriarchy, casteism, major faults of communist movements not tackling caste, and police violence.
History of naxalbari movement by amar bhattacharya ; A lot of history and anecdotes surrounding the maoist/naxal movement. Beginning from majumdar trying to send a letter to mao, to like broader history of the movement across the nation.
The Indian big bourgeoisie by suniti kumar ghose ; Traces history of bourgeoisie in india since 1947.
Philosophical trends in feminism by anuradha ghandy ; Anuradha was an influential communist who was a part of adivasi revolutionary feminist organization and armed struggle.
Walking with comrades by arundathi roy - Its an account on India's long standing anti communist operations aided by the west on the naxals and the tribal regions in india.
I will also try and add some documentaries. I will link them if I can but they can be also found online too.
Also trigger warning, lot of these are real accounts of pogroms and genocidal violence/sexual violence committed by fascists.
Ram ke naam by anand patwardhan.
I remember a while back there was some bbc docu that got reactions from indian sangh and government that they banned it. A lot of online people were hailing bbc as some brave institution. All the while real documentaries made way back by Indian filmmakers which are banned in the country are paid no interest.
Anyway this is a documentary regarding hindu fascists and their rise. Specifically during 90s and their own march to rome incident leading upto a very massive pogrom targeting babri masjid. It can be found on youtube. Last I checked it was still there.
Final solution by Rakesh sharma. Its about genocidal pogroms carried out in gujarat in 2002. Very thorough look through the whole incident. Again trigger warning about genocidal pogroms and their harrowing details on sexual violence are described.
Vivek reason by anand patwardhan. A very bleak documentary about 2010s fascist prominence and their sprawling ability to carry out gladio operations and target leftist outspoken figures. Its also on youtube but I remember there were no subtitles early on and it was in 10 parts. But there was also compiled version with subs if i recall.
Grief stricken winds by arun annow. There are 2 parts and they are very thorough look at the tamil genocide conducted by sri lanka. Its a mirror to what is currently happening in gaza. Part one deals with the settler colonial project undertaken by the sri lanka's sinhala nationalists. Also its connections to israel and britain early and later into the genocide. It also deals with escalatory genocidal actions known as the black july and burning of one of the most iconic library with ancient historical text collections going back to 2nd century.
Part two goes into years forward into years during 9/11 and war on terror funding sri lanka's genocidal ambitions. And broadly touches on the civil war and genocide. All the tactics are even aided by british genocidaires who were active in the troubles and lot Israeli support. There's is also a lot India support along with china. But the specific warcrimes committed by india are supposedly in the upcoming part. There is a very 1:1 parallel to what's occurring in gaza.
It leaves me with a lot of rage when know nothing dumbasses dismiss these things as some impediment to their "precious leftist movement" or some sort of distraction. Or even lending credence to genocidal criminals cause they are nominally leftist.
Also watch these two parts on youtube or they are also on vimeo uncensored. But again, warning lot of graphic violent genocidal actions/sexual violence are talked and lot of evidence is provided from victims. There is also a channel 4 documentary from uk which documents a pot of these crimes. Cause like the idf these fascists also took a lot videos committing genocide. And I urge people to see and remember these crimes cause a lot of it goes unheard and dismissed outright.
I would also add the sri lanka's killing fields documentary (Tw; Genocide; pogroms;Sexual violence). This one is also very through. Check it out.
Sorry this is a long comment.
I got things to read now. Wow
the ability of usamericans to be so confident in completely wrong statements is something that psychologists will study for years
i had a two paragraph rant written with spite and vitriol before deciding not to post it and keep it in my notes app. ill save that for a fucking rainy day.
one cant subsist on anger every hour alone. i wish i had more love in my days.
when you're ready comrade
