So, I only recently started my first run through. Didn't give a flying fig about the romance stuff, it was just something to click through to get back to story and combat.

Annnnd then act 3 hits, and Lae'zel wants to talk one morning and gives a dialogue that actually brought a tear to my eye. Ffs, she's one of the least likable characters at the beginning of the game. More an annoyance than anything else, story wise.

And then she rejects her queen, finds love and there's this beautiful moment. Definitely not the writing I expected for her, but damned if it didn't work.

Makes me want to actually pay attention to the romance arcs now, see what the rest are like.

You should try Astarion's romance on your next play through.

And then Karlach.

They're both great.

Astarion is so high maintenance lol. I bet it's a wild ride getting him from A to B

Karlach though, that's my homie. If she was real, I would hang with her any time. I can imagine her romance story being very sweet

Karlach is TOO much of a homie, I can’t even imagine her romantic storyline. She’s probably my favourite character from any game

I didn't romance her but through my first playthrough I was willing to sacrify everything for her. It was looking hopeless in the end but I was so surprised and relieved by the ending I got. I love her, but also unsure if I'd like a romantic bond with her.

She really is awesome. Her writing combined with the voice actor make her feel so damn real and likeable. When I got her second "upgrade" to her heart, the options I had included a hug, and it was so fulfilling. I wanted to hug her. I was smiling from it for a while after I'd moved on.

For real, her voice actor did a phenomenal job on making the character feel real and relatable. The writers definitely did their job well with her, but the performance takes it to another level. I agree with you, top game character ever for me, even over Minsc lol.

I like to play each run trying to romance a different character just to see all the different story arcs. There is actually an achievement for romancing Karlach (working on this one in my current game). There are a few unexpected ones as well... Enjoy!

I unexpectedly got minthara started by random clicking after a the raid playing the durge origin as a side thing when I need a break from act 3's tangled web of arcs. It was.. less romance than soft core porn, but if there's good development in act 2/3 it could be really interesting.

Romancing Shart, then Minty is where I realized I have a predilection for unavailable, aloof, and aggressive women who treat me poorly. Explains some things.

I can imagine lol.

My (female) character's romance with Shadowheart was disappointingly uneventful. Glad you got a good one. Perhaps I'll get lucky in my next play-through.

[–] southsamurai@sh.itjust.works 2 points 5 months ago (1 children)

I've heard that shadowheart is really finicky to romance.

[–] who@feddit.org 4 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Oh, she had clearly chosen my character as her partner; it's just that the scenes and interactions they had as partners were few and forgettable.

My play-through started shortly after the game's release. I wonder if the Shadowheart + girl romance scenes have expanded/improved since then.

Kinda surprising they didn't give the character more oomph for romance. She essentially starts out as the most versatile option for it, being able to mesh into pretty much any arc and remain interesting.

If you're a guy and went to experience being blissfully gay, go after Gale next.

[–] poweruser@lemmy.sdf.org 2 points 5 months ago

Gale is such a sweetheart. I agreed to gay romance him mostly for the lulz but I found myself really moved by how gentle and caring he is.

Although his interaction with the wizard in the tower in act 3 was somewhat less wholesome lol

@southsamurai@sh.itjust.works I bought the game early on without much investigation as I'd been looking for a DnD game and this seemed to be it. I played without any research, and I didn't even know there was a romance mechanic. I discovered it when somehow Lae'zel had dialogue options that seemed ... unusual (for her). Turns out, pretty much the ONLY character I don't have to try to romance is Lae'zel. Seems my playstyle is exactly what fits her character.

Every time. All the others take a lot of work.
