My first 100 km ride ! (leminal.space)
submitted 2 months ago* (last edited 1 month ago) by Marvin_Rouge@leminal.space to c/bicycles@lemmy.ca

Made my first "100 km ride" last Monday! Kinda proud, so I wanna share 😊. 112 km, 5.5 hours total, cumulative elevation gain ~~3800 m~~ β†’ I think OpenTracks fooled me there, it's more likely 1230 m… 🫒

Nah man, you haven't ridden 100km.

You've ridden 100km on a MTB, which makes it so much more impressive!

[–] Marvin_Rouge@leminal.space 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Thanks :-D That's the only one I got, and it's a good one.

I love MTBs, their versatility is unmatching, but damn are they slow! I used to go 18km/h average on my old Merida, now I have Rose Count Solo 2 and I get some astounding 24km/h πŸ˜„

This one's my "first" bike since my teen years, more than a quarter of a century ago… I'm quite happy with it, but yes, it needs some stamina!

Is it the gear range that mainly affect the speed? Have to ask as the only bike i ever rode is 20inch wheel heavy as heck bmx and currently a folding bike πŸ˜…

I'd say wheels might be the most important of all, you can even improve your speed significantly without putting in any money just by increasing their pressure

The gear range, the tires and the weight.

[–] Amuletta@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

The tires, mostly. I had one of the early mountain bikes back in the 80s and kept a wardrobe of tires for it. (This was when there was a lot more choice for 26" wheels). The 1.75" moderately knobby ones were for daily commutes, the smoother 1.375" for weekend camping trips with the touring club, the chunky 2.25" knobbies were for the rare occasions when I actually used it as a mountain bike. On Friday night I would swap over for whatever I planned to do that weekend, then change back on Sunday night. I got to be really fast at tire changes after a while.

Interesting! I'm looking to get a mtb around this month to replace my bmx, so maybe i could swap to 1.75" for commuting. Hopefully the option isn't limited in my country for 26" (i am short)

Some ridiculous elevation gains too!

[–] Marvin_Rouge@leminal.space 4 points 2 months ago

Yeah ;-) it's all mountains around here, it's hard to avoid them!

I think OpenTracks fooled me there, it's more likely 1230 m… 🫒 I edited my 1st post.

That's a lot of elevation gain, I don't think I ever drove that much yet.

[–] Marvin_Rouge@leminal.space 2 points 2 months ago

I'm the first surprised that I've completed it.

100km is a huge ride! Nice work. See anything cool along the way?

[–] Marvin_Rouge@leminal.space 3 points 2 months ago

Thanks! And yes, the landscapes were pretty awesome. The mountains and the lake are beautiful. I also rode along the river RhΓ΄ne and a small canal, that was easier but still very nice. The ride was pretty diverse, so it was worth the sweat :-D

[–] psx_crab@lemmy.zip 5 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Nice! My max range is 20km before i have to call it quit, can't imagine doing 100km!

[–] Marvin_Rouge@leminal.space 2 points 2 months ago

Thanks! I couldn't, either. 20km is pretty good. Repeat it as much as you can, and it should become easier.

That'impressive, congrats! The landscapes must be gorgeous

[–] Marvin_Rouge@leminal.space 3 points 2 months ago

Indeed they were! And pretty diverse, too.

[–] absquatulate@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Congrats! And extra upvote for the rum chocolate, lol

[–] Marvin_Rouge@leminal.space 2 points 2 months ago

Thanks! 10/10 for your vision ;-)
