Nah, the "generic" sized ones are reasonably larger - a chicken or larger (?). They get kinda big cos historically they had no predators - now they're fucked ever since we brought cats, dogs and possums etc with the colonists (and that mad fucker that thought gorse would be a good idea!)

In fairness, until this article came out, I only thought we had a single breed of kiwi, so I'm clearly no expert...
