Wait! I'm not with THEM! There's an unfortunately loud part of the country that is giving the GOP, conservatives, and Americans a bad name. This comm is for the rest of us, the quiet majority. If there is anything worth conserving, it's our values: Respect, Integrity, and Truth.

This comm is for the posting about US politics from a right, but not alt-right, perspective.

Rules:

  1. Treat each other with respect. Follow lemmy.today instance rules. Follow your instance rules.
  2. Social media posts must either include a timestamp in the image or be accompanied by a timestamp in the text of the post. Posts with an inaccurate or missing timestamp will be removed. Relative timestamp (e.g. "5 mins ago") will be removed.
  3. Only use high quality news sources. They all have bias, but quality and truth are a requirement. News articles must have a non-fictitious, non-anonymized byline. Fox is not a high quality news source.

We can kick the broader topic around all day, be happy to, but I'm wondering if many liberals have changed their view. I've seen a great many posts on lemmy stating just that, but is a sea change coming?

During the first Trump administration, and maybe continuing until today, LGBT, blacks and women, taken as a whole, were the top gun purchasing demographic. I've posted that fact dozens of times over the years, both here and on reddit. I'm betting that caused some cognitive dissonance!

"We love trans people!"

"They sure are buying shitloads of guns! And they're most welcome to the community!"

"..."

While we're at it, notice how ICE is targeting non-armed areas like NYC and LA? OTOH, that may be to punish liberal areas. Both?

Anyway, I have a brown, legal, immigrant wife, so I have a dog in this fight.

On a grand social level, most left leaning people would prefer no easy access to guns. Other countries have succeeded in this, for their own reasons.

In the United States, the people targeting minorities have guns. Minorities buying guns is self defense and a reaction to increased persecution.

Other left leaning people who are normally against guns recognize that oppressed minorities are less likely to commit hate crimes with them(especially against people that support them), and more likely to use them for defense, as a deterrent, or for radical action against oppression.

Honestly, left leaning people (like myself) currently saying stuff remotely pro self defense using guns is more an expression of hope of arguably evil people (read: ICE) being shot than actual belief that this is likely to happen on a broad-scale.

This is for at least these two reasons:

  1. For a variety of reasons, minority groups that could currently have use for guns for legitimate self defense are the ones who overwhelmingly do not have guns. As someone from a country with sane gun laws, I consider it relatively straightforward that having more guns is not the solution to this, also, see 2.
  2. Shooting someone from the government coming to kidnap will not really prevent you from being kid napped for longer than a few hours, maybe days. The state out-arms you as an individual significantly (which arguably is not a bad thing), and this has been the case for over a hundred years now. Meaning: the actual effectiveness of guns for self defense against state violence is near zero for the individual.

On a systemic level, it would however improve the status quo if there were notable risk for ICE agents to kidnapping people, i.e. being shot. This is probably not gonna happen for the aforementioned reasons. You can (and we do) still have hope though.

So: All of the valid criticisms of easily available weapons remain valid, it is just unfortunate that in this less-than-ideal world we're inhabiting where guns are readily available, the good people don't have them. Maybe being a good person just correlates with not liking weapons designed for murder all that much on average...

I believe it is a sane response for a person to try to avoid needing self defense. It's not my response (if that tells you anything about me) but I can respect it. I believe most non-gun owners (specifically those that don't even WANT a gun) believe that their place in the city is safe enough that they don't need a lethal weapon. But you can't control every situation.

I have a few guns. I absolutely adore the sport of it. I hope I never need to use them in self defense, but when seconds matter the cops are minutes away.
