I highly recommend the noclip documentaries on YouTube about Dwarf Fortress. It is a highly wholesome and insightful series.

For less insightful stuff, may I recommend Boatmurdered, the chronicle of a succession game (one person plays a year and then passes the same file to someone else) of Dwarf Fortress:

This has no bearing on my life whatsoever but a developer releasing a QoL update after 15 years is pretty cool and great marketing.

This doesn't invalidate your point, but DF is still under active development. The game has been worked on consistently since the early aughts.

Adding more info, it just got released on Steam a year back, as a paid version with actual graphics. You can get the free ASCII version from the website still, AFAIK.

For anyone curious, the learning curve is obscene even with graphics instead of ASCII.

It's really not that bad

Check out Nethack. Been worked on since the 80’s.

Nethack is open source and maintained by the community though, unlike DF which is still under Tarn the original dev.

I dunno, I kinda wish he'd fixed it at some point ten years ago

Gods no, hippies use bows. Marksdwarves use crossbows. One is a superior product of industry, the other is made from gaslighting trees into weird shapes.

Cheers, definitely something I’ve wanted to do!

Beware the torch for it bears a curse.

Those who pick it up cannot relinquish it, merely pass it to another. The flame shall be tended and always a bearer must toil.

Let not the bearer convince you to take the entire burden, for like Atlas, they will not willingly take it back.

There is no such thing as gaslighting.

Edit: I'm amazed how many people are missing the point.

Lol. I saw it at 0 downvotes. Tbh this makes it better.

Can I still employ a blind marksdwarf to Vayne ult behind enemy lines?
