There is no mass transit in the US. How can something that isn't alive have a death spiral?

For most of the country, you're right, but there are some areas that actually have somewhat reasonable amount of transit. The article even mentions some by name specifically.

If you can't travel from region to region we don't have mass transit. Just being able to commute in your city (I can't even do that) doesn't cut it.

i dont think thats the definition of mass transit but anyways if u want it bad enough there are always chartered buses, they are a lot less bad than most people imagine.
