Well, he's an adult, can't he move or something? Like, no one forces him to be around them if it puts him in too much stress.

I think being a non-judgemental friend / safe person is probably the best you can do. Somebody he knows won't judge him for something he can't control.
Standard atheism rules though. Don't let him reveal his queerness to his family until it's at a dinner he paid for, and he's living in a house he pays for.
