In settings, I've checked 'open links in new tab', but it doesn't work. Is there anything I can do to fix it?

ETA Someone suggested I try a different interface, and turns out it works fine in alex.lemmy.ca, just not lemmy.ca. So problem is at least kind of solved! Thanks so much everyone for taking the time to help!

i just tested this and it appeared to work for me. post links opened in new tabs, but links in comments or post bodies didn't open in new tabs.

are any of those working for you?

I just double-checked, an no links open in new tabs... not the links for posts, not the links within posts leading to news articles and such... so neither internal, nor external links open in new tabs.

hmmm. what browser/os are you using?

[–] ehpolitical@lemmy.ca 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I use Chrome, but tried it with Edge and it still didn't work. Someone suggested I try a different user interface, and turns out it works fine on alex.lemmy.ca, just not on lemmy.ca. Problem now is, my email notifications bring me to lemmy.ca and there's no way to change that. So I have to either settle for one problem, or constantly be using two interfaces. But at least they aren't major problems.

yeah, lemmy is still rough around the edges a bit. but it's always improving.

still weird that doesn't work for you. only other thing I can think of is to try a hard refresh, and if that doesn't work, logging out and back in.

but yeah, some of the other interfaces are pretty nice too.

Thanks, I'll try your suggestions. But even if it doesn't work, it's not nearly a big enough problem that I would leave and go back to you know where :p I'm starting to get used to lemmy and enjoying it! And it's CANADIAN :) Thanks for taking the time, appreciate it!

In your browser settings see if your settings are set to open links in new tabs.

[–] ehpolitical@lemmy.ca 1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Ya, I checked it a couple of times to be sure... even unchecked it, then checked it off again and it's still not working.

Does this behavior work as expected on other sites?

Do you have another browser you could try it in. It may be your browser not the website. If it does work in a different browser as expected then its not the site.

I always set my browsers to open links in new tabs, but just tried with a different browser in case and it still didn't work in the other browser.

When I click on an external link it does open in a new tab for me. 🤔

[–] ehpolitical@lemmy.ca 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Hmm, doesn't work for me... I'm constantly surfing away then having to come back. It's minor, but annoying.

Just to confirm, this option is for external links, not links within the current domain (lemmy.ca).

[–] ehpolitical@lemmy.ca 2 points 5 days ago

The option doesn't specify external or internal where you check it off, so I assumed it was for all links... but it doesn't matter cause it's not working for either... I just double-checked to make sure.

For some reason it opens in a new tab in Linux but in the same tab in Windows for me. I've never been able to figure out why 🤷

[–] ehpolitical@lemmy.ca 2 points 5 days ago (2 children)

I can't figure it out either. Just that this is the only site where it's not working, so I wondered if there was something in the settings here that I'm missing.

If you aren't able to fix this, another option is to use an alternative front-end. I booted into Windows and couldn't get it to work properly but I tried two front-ends -- photon and tesseract -- and both opened external links properly in new tabs.

Thanks, but I'm afraid you're talking over my head now... I haven't a clue what any of that means, sorry.

Sorry! It's actually pretty simple. There are different interfaces you can use (like Reddit vs old Reddit). You can find the links on the instance sidebar.

These are the two I mentioned:

https://photon.lemmy.ca/
https://tess.lemmy.ca/

Same account but just a different look and feel (and sometimes a few extra features). You can switch between them by just using the different urls.

No worries, I appreciate your help! Ha, I just tried it in alex.lemmy.ca and it works! So it's only lemmy.ca I'm having the problem with. Thank you!

Before the option was available in Lemmy, I used to force it to open in a new tab with a greasemonkey script. That should still work if you're not able to get it to work the way it's supposed to.

edit: I think it was this script.

Cool, thank you!
