Long, long overdue but I'm so nervous for the first woman who makes it to the grid, going to be so much attention and scrutiny.

There have been female drivers before. 5 in fact. But yes the next female driver to get a race seat is gonna have one hell of a media storm around them.

Idiots get batshit already:

I don't understand how people can be so fragile that a woman driving an F1 car can cause such responses. It almost seems like they have to talk her down just to make sure that their own pride isn't hurt

[-] c4lm@lemmy.world -2 points 11 months ago

The fact that this is being talked about says a lot!

It's an article about Aston Martin testing, with two drivers, one is the current F2 Champion, and the other has achieved nothing of note!

Guess which driver we're talking about?!

You're skipping steps. When a woman driving an F1 car won't be an exception anymore, then your comment will be valid. Until then, it is important to talk about it, to motivate other women and F1 teams to continue exploring this path

I don’t understand what you’re getting at. Are you saying she’s being tested because she’s a woman and AM is trying to look inclusive? Or are you saying AM is taking a risk by testing an unproven driver?

[-] c4lm@lemmy.world 9 points 11 months ago

I'm saying the only reason this test session is being discussed is because they put a girl in the car.

She's not unproven, that's what the lower formulas are for! Three years in Formula W, best finish 9th, on merit she shouldn't be anywhere near a formula 1 car.

[-] Microw@lemm.ee 4 points 11 months ago

I'd think if they put a guy into the car with the same career as her, we'd also talk about it because it is so unusual.

Usually you have F2, F3, IndyCar drivers at F1 tests and that's it.

[-] troed@fedia.io -1 points 11 months ago

Yet she is. Maybe AM knows more about her than you.

[-] UrPartnerInCrime@sh.itjust.works 5 points 11 months ago

Mate I get what you're trying to get at, but it ain't there

[-] The_one_and_only@lemmy.ml 5 points 11 months ago

I'm sorry, but Calderon dominated the W-series, but did not get any resemblance of succes in F2 before that, and ended up 29th in IndyCar in 2022.

Why do you think a driver who did not even finish high in the same W-series somehow has what it takes to make it in F1.

I believe it was Tost who once said that F1 is by definition not discriminatory. Teams spend tens of millions to find fractions of a second per lap. If putting a woman behind the wheel would help, they would have done it in a heartbeat. And as soon as there is someone who is faster, F1 wants that person, regardless of gender or race or whatever.

I wonder what she would have been able to achieve if she hadn't run into funding issue.

[-] Photographer@lemmy.world 7 points 11 months ago

Well she's in F1 academy next year so we'll see how she compares to other drivers, but realistically dozens of drivers drop out every year due to funding and we've not seen any of them to be diamonds when given the chance.

[-] Microw@lemm.ee 1 points 11 months ago

She is? Where has this been announced?

[-] Photographer@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago

The BBC news article about the test said she was driving for Aston in academy, but the sky article about her more recently doesn't say drive but "playing a role" so could be crossed wires between journalists or waiting an official announcement

[-] SilentSeven@lemmy.world 5 points 11 months ago

Good for AM for giving her some seat time. F1 is overdue for some female presence.

[-] TheBlue22@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 11 months ago
