Hey there everyone. I think the Photon project has matured enough to the point where I feel ready to replace the default lemmy frontend with it. Since this instance serves roughly 1000 people now, I figured this was worth holding a vote on!

Please check out Photon as currently hosted at https://p.lemdro.id.

If you support changing the default frontend to Photon, upvote my comment on this post. If you don't support it, downvote that same comment.

Thanks!

My vote goes to whatever makes you feel like you're offering the best experience to your users. People that don't like it can always switch to the old one.

I think it makes sense as a mobile-focused instance. Wouldn't surprise me most of us are using mobile apps anyway...

Photon is quite good on desktop as well! I appreciate your feedback

Personally I very rarely browse on the web but the default web UI is kinda crappy imo.

As long as old.lemdro.id stays I am happy.

it's not going away!

old

Has it been down the last couple of days? I'm getting a Cloudflare error

[-] cole 2 points 1 year ago

Fyi, it should be fixed now

Photon has cards and looks so good. Take my upvote and set it default when possible.

+1 for me with l.lemdro.id reserved for lemmy-ui.

FYI: Photon doesn't have the routes for "verify email", "forgot password", or "change password" at the moment. You'll need to pass /password_change, /verify_email, and /login_reset to lemmy-ui until support is added and add links to your site info or somewhere people can find them.

Ran into that when I moved it to my Apex domain and demoted lemmy-ui.

While I personally use alexandrite on desktop and Sync on mobile, I absolutely think that Photon looks fantastic these days and certainly deserves to be the default experience for lemdroid. I would feel proud to share a lemdroid link to someone random knowing that it would show them this nice of a front end.

Not being familiar with Photon vs. Lemmy front end, I'll risk sounding ignorant with the following questions.

Will anything change in my user experience? Can I still use the same app (Connect) and username to see the same fediverse?

[-] cole 7 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Nothing changes if you already use a different frontend or app, so no action from you! But, for example, if you sent a lemdro.id post link to a friend the interface they'd see would be different

Thanks for the explanation. Seems good to me, so I'll upvote your original comment.

Yes, move default to old or default or classic or some similar subdomain

[-] cole 5 points 1 year ago

I figured it would move to https://l.lemdro.id

I often use Connect on mobile. Like what someone else said, maybe have a voting poll (or upvoting comments) for what front end is the best?

[-] cole 4 points 1 year ago

I really think Photon fits my philosophy for what I want this instance to look like, which is why it isn't just a "vote for the one you like". But I have others available as options of course!
