Edit: Quote from the announcement:

This calls for the Richard response copypasta which explains that it wasn't GNU, when coupled with Linux, that brought the world the leading server and supercomputer operating system, but it was rather the Linux kernel, supported by the GNU coreutils, that achieved this success. If Linus was like Stallman, this success would not have happened. If Hurd was ready and Stallman and everyone else just went with GNU/Hurd, Linux would have found some other utilities to work with. But GNU as an OS would have never reached the success that GNU/Linux has nowadays without Linux.
