Without spoiling anything, it’s one of those books where you realize things by the end that make you reconsider your impression of everything that came before.
My understanding is that the novel is an expansion of an earlier short story—I haven’t read the short story, but I remember thinking after finishing the book that it might have worked better if it didn’t wade through so much setup before getting to the payoff. If you’re ready to give up, you might want to just read the story instead.
