If you haven't dropped the /s, I would suggest "at a shelter", for instance.
Those cost as much or more than the breeders now. Still recommended, but not cheap or free. I just look at it as a donation for them to keep saving lives. Our most recent was found on the side of the road in a pillow case.
She's doing much better now.

I still had to pay a fee when I adopted mine. It wasn't much, but I still considered it "buying" my dog.
