It's a lot for an app, but it's something I use for a couple hours a day so it was honestly a no brainier for me. The initial cost is higher than a lot of apps but when I look at how many thousands of hours I got out of sync for reddit, the price evens out. Just something to consider.
did you reply to the wrong person? what you said doesn’t really have any bearing on their thing. they still don’t have $20 to burn, and this is still a whacky price increase that lacks meaningful reasoning.
i’m glad you can reconcile that price to yourself, but the “just something to consider” reads as though this were a logical conclusion everyone should come to, and it simply isn’t.
Most people spend more money on things that they get less out of. Sure, $20 is a lot compared to many other smartphone apps but you could also easily blow the same amount, if not more, on lunch or something like that. If you like the app and intend on using it, spending $20 to support the dev really isn't that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things. I do understand that with exchange rates, the equivalent to 20 USD in many countries is prohibitively expensive but LJ said he's working on regional pricing.
ok again you’re addressing different things. i’m not asking for reasoning as to why it’s an understandable amount to pay, i’m looking for an explanation behind the price increase.
the comment you replied to originally was pondering the same thing, and you replied with why you think $20 is worth it. hence my being confused, as it seems you’re just having a different conversation here.
The price increase is there because enough people can justify paying for it. I'm not sure why it's so confusing for you to understand that. Idk man... If you don't think it's worth it, don't buy it.
if literally the only justification behind the price hike is “probably people are willing to pay more”, then i guess all the people yelling “greedy dev” aren’t completely baseless.
Dude's gotta eat. There's less of a market than sync for reddit had.
i’d suggest he get some supplemental income then. the market for lemmy apps is oversaturated. sync has dedicated fans, but the overall response to this pricing structure should be proof enough that this wasn’t the optimum move.
this could’ve started with a regular ass subscription price to get rid of ads, and a message asking for donations with the intention to add more (maybe even paid) features later on, once sync is established as something more than a big name from the reddit days. instead we get a $100 price tag and an assurance it’ll probably be more worth it later on (i know users don’t have to pay for ultra premium or whatever to use the app, but it’s a matter of principal).
if you’re already a sync user it’s easy to do that on trust, but consider the perspective of someone who’s first real exposure to the app was this brushfire. the amount of vitriol that’s been thrown over comments on the level of “i think $100 is too much” hasn’t exactly given anyone warm fuzzies for sync.
There is... Do you even know what you're talking about? The price to remove ads perpetually is $20 with perpetual ultra being $100. Ultra can also be bought for $2/mo or $17(ish?)/year subscriptions.
Look, some people don't have an issue paying money to support the dev and the development of the app. You clearly don't which is totally fine! There are tons of different options available. You don't have to like sync or the pricing model but talking down on people who do is absurdly stupid.
This conversation is so unproductive I'm out.
dog i said i know there’s other options available, it’s the premise i take issue with here. for a player completely unproven in this space to even have an option to pay $100 is wild.
conversations tend to be nonproductive when you don’t engage with them in a meaningful way.
LJ has a 10+ year reputation. Some people want to support him and pay $100 but no one has to. You keep shifting goalposts which is why you think I'm not meaningfully engaging lmao. Alright I'm actually out. I'm just repeating myself at this point.
you’re responding to a single sentence out of every message, but sure.
