Incidentally, the temple priests have been around ever since agriculture, insisting they are the channel through which divine favor is had. It's also been a controversy for about that long, with various rebels (including pre-resurrection Jesus) trying to say the temple priests don't know any more than you do. Figure out your own faith!

So the temples have been political as long as there has been politics.
