Seems like it could just scale, why would it take hundreds of players? For the joint computing power?

Yeah they’re going way beyond what a single game session can handle. ~500GB of RAM combined!

My server has about a quarter of that!

It's explained in the article. There's a hard-coded limit on the rate of science you can produce.
