But at the end of the day, a symbol is just a symbol - without anything directing people towards action, it doesn't do much.

Like the Occupy Wall street movement. It got a lot of attention, organized a lot of people, and accomplished nothing. People were like "what is this for?" And the answer was pretty much "we're angry!", So the reply was just "okay..."
