Homo economicus has a long history. It was first used by John Stuart Mill as a good thing, but later the idea was criticized heavily by Keynes, Veblen, and other non-classical economists. Today that tradition has turned to outright derision by those who think that model of humankind is thoroughly debunked, yet dumb neolibs just keep on chugging along with it.
