While I said I don't want it to be a struggle session, cool headed good faith discussion is also appreciated. This just came up with some comrades of mine and I couldn't find the last post about it so if anyone has the link that would be great too.

i know i can probably get to the bottom of this with a simple google search, but does "moron" have some kind of shit origin or nah?

[–] Mindfury@hexbear.net 16 points 2 years ago (2 children)

oh god oh fuck

Moron is a term once used in psychology and psychiatry to denote mild intellectual disability. The term was closely tied with the American eugenics movement. Once the term became popularized, it fell out of use by the psychological community, as it was used more commonly as an insult than as a psychological term. It is similar to imbecile and idiot.

i feel like this should make something a candidate for fair game. if everybody except nerds forgot about an association then that association isn't being made in common use. Like how people who say or write "ATM machine" have jettisoned the idea of what ATM stands for completely.

this quick search has also led me to finding out "cretin" has similar origins

what a fucking rollercoaster

Ok who tf is Nick Mullen and why do hexbears keep mentioning him

i've actually never listened to an episode of cumtown, but he was one of three hosts of that and was the most, well, problematic one from what i know. basically a walking slur dispenser.

it probably says something that the other two hosts seem to have started new projects on their own (Stav seems to be doing alright at stand-up, Adam Friedland interviews famous people now) and nick mullen has seemingly disappeared off the face of the earth (to me, as someone who only knows random bytes of information about these people)

I've been exposed to stav by way Hasan, and his stand up. Seems like a decent guy. Adam friedlands name I recognise, but thats it. Nick Mullen I'll have to look up tonight, but both he and cumtown are just spectres I know nothing of beyond hushed whispers
