I remember when hackerspaces were in every major city, and quite a few medium sized cities also had them.

Now, most are gone, for various reasons.

What gives?

I don't see it like that. At least in central Europe (mostly radiating out from Germany) there are a lot. I mean, just look at the Hackerspaces.org list

Also, Hackerspaces don't exist in a vacuum. Money is tight, which usually means dwindling membership numbers, which leads to closures. Those complaining about disappearing Hackerspaces are usually those who weren't members.
