I guess I kind of understand why companies want you to be logged in to engage with their platform, as the user metrics are the main selling point to advertisers, but man do I really fucking hate it when a platform forces me to log in by preventing me from using their website. So much so, that I haven't made an account on Instagram or X or Facebook or whatever dumb social media platform specifically because I can't browse without signing up. Well, that, and also the greed, the lack of privacy, the tacit endorsement of fascism, et. cetera.
No, I don't want to make an account.
No, I don't want to download your app.
No, I don't want to turn on notifications.
Gah, fuck off with all this horseshit. The internet used to be fun. Now everything is a chore and nobody does anything unless they feel like they can make a profit off of it.
This combo drives me up the fuckin wall.
Obviously I think reddit is trash, but I can kind of understand other forums requiring a login (several of the small, private communities I'm a part of require them) but there is no good reason to push people to an app other than avarice.
It's extra frustrating because I created cosmetic filters for uBlock Origin that allow me to access individual Reddit posts (so I can still read Reddit posts that I find through a search engine) but not any of the feeds so that I can't waste time scrolling. I can't use those on the app.
i cant stand new reddit ui, so i just used a reskin extension(just a warning its not 100% perfect)
forums i understand, im in one other one about "earning money on reddit"
The big problem is most people say "Ugh, fine, I'll log in with Google," rather than you and I who say "Ugh, no."
log in with google is way worse. now you are sharing your data with both Google and Reddit
Emphatically agree, but "normies" gonna "normie."
Convenience is the primary goal for them.
hard to log in when you get banned so easily, thats why people lurked.
I don't have a problem with someone making a website for logged in users only. What sucks is making this open anonymous forum that was quite good for years and then locking it down once people are addicted to it. Well, this doesn't change much for me i deleted my reddit years ago and haven't been back at all.
also the new UI for reddits very cumbersome, and very intrsuive and not very intuitive to use. you can use extensions to remove the ugly sidebars with random stuff on it, but now you are left with 2 giant empty white spaces in between the doom scroll feed.
only way they can even do this is how much users they already have and how entrenched those users are. Its insane how much people are willing to put up with to keep using the shitty services, just because they have used them for long time.
they apparently lost alot of actual users enough for reddit to become desperate to force logins. i think thats why Facebook did it too, gotta keep those boomers/genxers using it for thier right wing slop. certain health groups(describing thier own diseases) are sitll on fb, but i would not touch it.
i saw a graph somewhere the recent traffic drop was from open AI not scraping anymore.
Same same, it's fucked
I mean, that's capitalism. It was inevitable. A similar fate will befall Lemmy at some point, so enjoy it while you can.
With all due respect to you and the user above as people, fuck the defeatist attitudes. We're going to make and keep this little part of the Internet fun, no matter what corporations say. I've had a great 3.5 years on Lemmy despite the occasional dramatic event. And I'm counting on myself and every one of us to continue to make it so.
Entropy is also inevitable, but that doesn't mean we can't keep a small space of less entropy than average while we're here.
lemmy wont become large enough to enshittyfy, its too segregated, its not a one size fit all which reddit is.
press x to doubt.
Seriously, there's a low chance for that.
